Does anyone know how long an update (like a feature update) that has been hidden via wushowhide tool will remain hidden assuming nothing changes on Microsoft's end? Separate from that, what can cause a hidden update to reappear in Windows update? I recall I hid anniversary update some time ago and it stayed hidden for a good three or four months but then without warning appeared in Windows update and downloaded.

Also, is there a simple/safe way to allow just Windows Defender updates to automatically get through a metered connection while continuing to block everything else that a metered connection blocks?

Finally, is there any serious downside to always keeping a metered connection? I have onedrive disabled and I use a local account. I don't mind occasionally manually checking the Windows Store for app updates like Mail etc.

A CU stays hidden as long as it doesn't change name. E.g. the KB4100347 Intel microcode updates for Windows 10 v1803 was named 2018-07 and reappeared as 2018-09. The FU stays hidden until Microsoft decides that is stable i.e until a new version is declared “Current Branch for Business” which can be even after a year of its initial release and should be forced to all systems. But it has happened before that they do it whenever they feel ike it....You can read more here
The WD can also be updated through the Windows Defender Security Center, without touching Windows Update. Unfortunately manually. To automate it, you can create a task, which runs 2-3 times a day (or as many times you want) and runs a PowerShell Update-MpSignature command.
As for meter connections always on, I'm not aware of any downsides.

I have been using the PSWindowsUpdate, instead of the "WindowsUpdates Show or Hide.diagcab" to do the same things and a lot more!

I created a task to run Windows Defender update with two triggers - one for 9am and other for 9pm - so twice a day at those times. It doesn't appear to have worked though since when I check show/hide the update is there and also win defender does not show it has updated definitions.

I guess I'm doing something wrong.

What path do you use for the program field?
What is the argument?

Added: Never mind I got it working. I had the program path in quotes so I think this messed it up?

I'm now using C:\Program files\Windows defender\MpCmdRun.exe without quotes for program and -SignatureUpdate as argument. Is that right? It does work.

Is there a way to not have that cmd box pop up when it runs the update?
