I think that even if it's a global setting, drivers that haven't been hidden with the wushowhide tool will still be installed through windows update regardless of the device driver settings. At least that's my conclusion after studying how all factors work. The safest bet IMO is to disable automatic updates and run a monthly manual windows update, but always first start with the diagcab tool to prevent eventual newer drivers than those already hidden. That's what I do.
What I finally did...and has worked so far, was restrict the update by imposing a Group Policy.
In the Group Policy Editor:
Local Computer Policy > Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Device Installation > Device Installation Restrictions > Prevent installation of devices that match any of these device IDs
I have added the HW ID of the camera and hasn't been changed/updated since.
And MS agrees with me.... :)
Prevent Installation of a Device by Hardware ID
Wouldn't that prevent the device from being installed at all instead of just drivers for it?
You can use this procedure to prevent installation of any device that matches a specified hardware ID.
You can choose any of the hardware IDs that apply to a device, from the very specific to the very general. If you choose a more general ID, then you prevent installation of an entire set of devices, rather than just one device.
If this policy is enabled, in addition to preventing installation of the affected devices, it also prevents users from updating the device drivers for already installed devices that match the policy setting.
@mertzi:
Exactly as you described it. Device Manager > Device > Properties > Details > Hardware Ids
@Brink
You're absolutely right Shawn. Devices with those IDs will not be installed if the Policy is enforced BEFORE their installation.
So the steps to follow should be:
1. You install the device (without the Policy) and update it, either with Windows Update or Manufacturer's driver.
2. You ensure that it works properly and
3. You enable the Policy to restrict its update and/or change.
Hi to all,
i am still looking for a way to select the updates i want to install......like you know, right now the Windows automatic update from win 10 don´t let me do it.
