I have the same problem. In my case, it happened after trying to connect my PC to my Xbox One. I uninstalled the Xbox app with a powershell command, then when I tried to reinstall it, I run a script in powershell to reinstall all Windows 10 apps but the opposite happened. I found myself with unusable apps with long weird names.

I'm gonna have to take a look at Brick's repair install link to see if I dare do that.

Thanks to this thread at least I know I'm not the only one with such a problem and that's a common bug in current versions of Windows 10.

Yep, just to confirm the repair install worked for me in this exact scenario and is well worth doing.

It would appear the bottom line is if you have Windows 10 November Update 1511 (aka build 10586) and you run the powershell command (as listed on hundreds of sites as the potential fix) to re-register apps it messes them all up!! This is apparently due to a bug in this version.

Personally I have run into the issue again on my 2nd machine and will have to run the repair install on that as well which is annoying to say the least.

Does anyone have any details of an official Microsoft KB article or a forum somewhere that confirms the bug is officially acknowledged and if they will be releasing a patch for it? It depresses me that there are so many issues with the Windows Store / Apps... how in the hell do they ever expect to compete with the likes of IOS or Android with shit like this?

Here here! It depresses me as well, Microsoft needs to recognize how bad this looks and spend whatever it takes to get it fixed immediately and then make sure things like this, if they happen again, are addressed super rapidly. Just cuz Windows 10 came as a free upgrade doesn't mean that the platform isn't super important and critical to the company and its clients. I'd guess I'm not the only one seriously considering abandoning the platform for Apple (not that I haven't already become a mixed user with more of my time spent on Apple products than Microsoft).

    Hello pietro,

You could see if doing a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened may help.

If not, then you could see if creating a new account on the PC to use instead works properly.

tried using powershell for adding/removing packages, cleaning registry references to the package, deleting the app folder under c:\program files\windowsapp... but something was still there as i could list the package... installed a backup and updated the store, it is now working

does anyone know where are stored these packages?! anywhere in appdata?!?

    Pietro,

In the worse case scenario, you should also be able to do a repair install to fix this without losing anything.

takes to much time to reconfigure all... better with a full backup

Having a problem with the Windows 10 store opening, and the Icon is missing from taskbar. While the space is still there, and the store name appears when you hover over it, when i right click on it, it won't open.
Now, here comes the should have known better part - i deleted some of the store apps and was trying to get them back, so i put a code into windows powershell and thats when it all went knees up. What appeared then in the Apps folder on the start menu i tried to delete, i clicked uninstall on them all, but low and behold they are still there and won't go away, and the windows store icon went missing at that point as well.
i tried the code on page 1 to re-register the windows store, incase i deleted it by mistake, but i got the below message.

Hello sekhmet, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

You might see if you may be able to do a system restore using a restore point dated before this happened to hopefully be able to quickly fix this.
