Thanks for that useful description, so far its the most elaborate of several hints on the internet, to fix this.

    Your description basically says
    1. manually change lock screen background to any non-windows-spotlight alternative
    2. run your script, which
    a) deletes the assets folder content
    b) deletes the settings folder content
    c) reregisters the content delivery manager
    d) disables dev mode
    3. reboot
    4. manually reactivate windows spotlight for lockscreen

I had 2 computers where I had to extend this process, to get it working again:
    1. computer: I needed to changed your script order, to first reregister the content delivery manager and then delete assets and settings. I did not even have to disable and reactivate spotlight for this, so I guess I might add this to autostart, once the problem reappears.
    2. computer: in settings/privacy/background apps, I had to allow edge to run in background (for some reasons that boolean value had flipped to "off")

Unfortunately nothing will fix it forever. It seems like once a few pictures have passed rotation or whenever there are Windows updates processed, it will most often break again.

    Welcome to TenForums @jidrutarif

My experience has been that 1709 was particularly prone to 'break again', but Brink's tutorial would fix it again every time. 1703 seemed more reliable, as does 1803. I suspect (but never managed to prove to my satisfaction) that having a metered connection caused it to break 'once a few pictures have passed'. It has worked reliably in 1803 since I upgraded at the beginning of May.

I'm working with 1807 since yesterday, and you guessed it: It broke again!

    FWIW

I’d done all the above, and more, to no avail. What finally seemed to get mine working again was to add some odd-looking permissions on to both the Lock Screen and Content Delivery Manager registry keys. I’d created a new user ID on my machine, for which Spotlight worked (thus proving the issue was in my user profile), and I noticed the reg keys for the new account had additional permissions that my own didn’t.

    The keys are:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Lock Screen
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ContentDeliveryManager

The former had S-1-15-3-1024-352835710-3145586182-2880647242-675368078-3441261668-1710821006-2032288639-3146782223 granted full access, the latter had S-1-15-3-1024-3036464858-3155602757-2052184566-2810840899-4148930525-1208855857-3369979990-1199230028 granted full access. Both propagated down the key, to all values.

You can’t actually add perms for these weird ‘guids’ in the Explorer GUI so I exported the permissions from the working account using SUBINACL, checked/edited the SUBINACL text files, and then used SUBINACL to apply the perms in my own profile.

After adding these perms, I went through the basic reset procedure, as at the start of this article, and the content downloading sprung into life. A restart, and my spotlight screen images were displaying again.

There are also similar odd file permissions on each app’s folder in Appdata\Local\Packages, and I’d already done the same permissions copying trick on those, so this may be need to be done also.

I suspect these weird ‘guids’ are used to grant other apps/process (not necessarily running under the user’s account) access to the files and registry data used by Lock Screen and Content Delivery.

Just an FYI... not working on my system 17134.228

Followed instructions and ran bat as is and elevated (as Admin)

When I click on Windows Spotlight the drop down menu disappears and Picture is left in box. If I do again Windows Spotlight will show but just get solid colour.

Mine got stuck when I went to 1803 and hasn't worked since. Sfc /scannow reports no errors.

@Caledon Ken, both my regular machines have worked reliably in 1803. Version 1709 worked until it broke (regularly, about once a month). This tutorial always got it going again. Since 1803 I haven't needed to fix it.

System One in my specs below runs Home. It was upgraded from W7 though all versions of 10, now on 1803. It last added pictures to the Assets folder on 14th, just before updating to 17134.228. It changed to showing one of the new pictures today.

System 'three' (if there were space to list it) is a clean install of 1803 Pro. That's worked reliably too, and was updated to 17134.228 yesterday. It downloaded new pictures to its Assets folder about an hour ago, but hasn't yet got round to using a new one on the lock screen.

When I last broke Spotlight beyond repair (trying to 'unlike' a photo in the registry after it got stuck there, version 1607 as I recall) an in-place repair install was needed to fix it.

    Thanks @Bree

My machine is a clean install 1703 with an immediate update to 1709 and I ran setup off USB (created by MCT) to get 1803.

Honestly with a name like Windows Spotlight you think this would work.

I've made no alteration or hacks.

I'll dig out my key and do an in place.

Change of plan. Set to another picture and move on. I will send in Feedback

    Windows spotlight

Since my first post here on this issue I have repaired the windows spotlight 5 times. It is always repaired to working order but then stops working. Perhaps it is updates. I gave up on it . Just not that important to have to keep fixing it. I have since downloaded some very nice wallpapers to use instead.

Are you on 1709 or 1803? I found 1709 behaved like that, but since the upgrade to 1803 it hasn't (yet) stopped working.

Never proved conclusively what broke Spotlight in 1709, but I suspect it was having set a Metered Connection. It seemed to break whenever it ran out of downloaded images to use.

    Windows spotlight

That was on 1709. I have since clean installed windows 1803 on the laptop that was having the issue and gave it to my nephew. As far as I know the spotlight is still working for him . I have since bought a new laptop and it is working on it with 1803. So far so good.
