Enable or Disable Windows Update Automatic Updates in Windows 10

i tried all of 5 options
3 4 5 worked fine i think
but firat and second options is not working
i tried to disable windows update completely i tried 1st and 2nd option even i disable windows update service but still auto update work i closed all apps and turned on my lap top and wifi and stayed in desktop no internet browsing or download but when i checked 700mb was download how can i disable update
i did 1st and 2nd option but in windows update setting that still show me auto downloads and notify me to schedule for restart thats not changed to neve check
and i disabled windows update service does it do any changes on auto update
and now i cant open windows update and update setting page anymore that stick on loading page and then page get close
help plz im play online game 2 much and update is a problem

Hey guys, I think I managed to get it working. Just one.. strange thing:
I set Windows Update to only notify me for new updates/download but, looking at the installed programmes, I found that I had the Realtek drivers, which I didn't manually downloaded. Now, I think they neither came from Windows Update because I should decide when to download updates. So, where did they come from?

Here is what I think we all want:

1. Notify only (never download or install without first allowing step 2)
2. Allow easy option to deselect updates (especially drivers) that we don't want or would prefer to update manually.

Basically, give us back the Windows Update we had, or the same options.

I've read this tutorial and all the posts along with Windows Update Automatic Updates - Enable or Disable in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums and all the posts there.

I'm having a hard time putting all the comments together into a cohesive state so that I can create a behavior similar enough to the old Windows Update to make me happy. If anyone can provide a step by step to provide this, I would be much appreciative.

The old Windows Update really is gone. Sorry. You can use Microsoft's special tool if you really want, but that's an extra not part of Windows.

Is there a way to search manually for updates without it being downloaded and installed automatically? While at the same time, Windows could search automatically for updates but will only download them after I give permission to?

The link to your post was helpful. I think I have a good idea what to do to have a similar behavior to the old Windows Update based on controlling what updates are ignored and not automatically installed.
Let me know if you think I have these in the correct order or if there is anything missing.

1. change Group Policy to option 2 (as per Brink's tutorial)
2. to scan for new updates manually use Run “UsoClient.exe StartScan”. do NOT use Windows update to check for updates – this will force download/install of all. (as per werby’s post)
3. run wushowhide.diagcab for option to “hide” selected updates. (as per Brink’s tutorial)
4. return to Windows Update in Settings, review list of updates to be installed (verify items hidden in step 3 are not present), click Download – finally.

I used the tip on how to get wushowhide.diagcab to pin to Start. I think I will do the same thing for UsoClient.exe StartScan so everything will be easily accessible. You guys are geniuses!

This change to Windows Update is extremely frustrating. I can understand that some people don't understand computers, so keeping their machines updated automatically might be a good thing, but not to allow those of us who know (or think we know) the option to choose what we want feels a bit like a user-is-dumb mentality or being dealt with on the lowest common denominator level. If I wanted that experience I would buy an iPad instead of a PC. I'm very appreciative to all the helpful tutorials/posts/comments I've found here on tenforums. Everyone is super helpful and considerate of each other. Thank you!

Using the information in werby's post here you can manually search for updates without Windows auto downloading and installing everything.

If you go to Windows Updates from within Settings you should be able to see a list of updates that Windows wants you to have. At this point I would suggest Brink's tutorial on how to hide updates you don't want before proceeding. You can also reference my previous post from a few minutes ago.

Having the option to manually search without auto download/install is very nice. I don't think Windows hasn't always done a great job of searching for updates on it's own in the time frame I want - mostly after a fresh reload. I had to click the Check for Updates (Win7/8.1) at least once to get a list of updates to appear, which usually ended up being a long list of things.

Thank you very much for the helpful answer. It's unbelievable how much of a hassle we have to do to accomplish something that was just a matter of (un)checking boxes in Windows 8.1.

Is Microsoft seriously planning to continue this way of installing updates?
