Enable or Disable Windows Update Automatic Updates in Windows 10  

Bit slow as very busy getting ready for our 5 month + road trip with Windows 10. Thanks for the tutorial. I think I have it figured out in Windows 10 home; went into services and turned auto updates to disabled. Could not STOP the service at this point so re-booted. Now it is where I want it to be. When I am located at a spot with Wi-Fi that works, I will be able to go back in and temporarily fire it up.

I have tried all the suggestions mentioned here to rid myself of annoying updates, and I think that Brink's RegEdit scripts take care of most of it just fine. Just to make certain (and 'certain' is not an absolute), however, I disabled updates completely in my Win10 installation, per instructions here. Only time will tell if this works (not sure when the next issue of updates is scheduled), but I do know that all this does nothing for daily updates to the Windows Defender Security Center. Even with all the means expressed or implied on the group here in place, my WDSC shows daily updates 'locked and loaded' despite it all. Not that I have a strenuous objection to keeping my antivirus current, but it just bugs me that it's updated without my asking or consent. If our friends in Redmond can get into my system to do that, Lord knows what else they could as easily do.

Sorry delay; busy busy busy. I did go into services as mentioned and turned it off there. This morning after booting up I noticed that auto update is back up and running. WTF. So did it again and will look at it again in the morning.

Should be a simple thing for us, as customers to be able to shut off and on whatever we want within any operating system. Shame of Microsoft. I paid good hard cash for my copy of 8.1

@Brink, with me GPEdit.msc shows an additional folder 'Defer Windows Update', containing two items:
-Select when Feature Updates are received
-Select when Quality Updates are received

Don't know whether this has been discussed somewhere in this 22 page thread, if not, maybe it is worthwhile adding to the gpedit.msc routine on the first page of this tutorial?

Ok; I an now in week two of being on the road with Windows 10. (still wish I had 7 on this laptop). Thanks to input received, I disabled Windows updates under "services". Yesterday I found a site with enough access to the internet to actually turn updates back on. I was a bit nervous about it being on the road and all. Went fine, sort of; Download rate at this site was actually 60-70 mps, but the updating took a ridiculous amount of time. Sort of hung at 32 %. So being the patient person the I am; I just shut it down, restarted and got the message that windows updates were complete. Who knows for sure. So, then disabled in services again and all is fine till next time I can check for updates. Maybe in a couple of weeks depending where I am hanging my hat. A friendly elderly gentleman sat beside me at another terminal, and on noticing what I was up to told me that Windows updates sucked his cell phone data dry and then some before he figured it out. (cell as a mobile hotspot ). He got a large and unwelcome bill from the cell company; Verizon I think.

Did something change in the Fall Creators update? I always disable the service after getting updates, but today I noticed that the Windows Update service had become re-enabled all by itself on all of my machines.
