I wonder whether the below is possible. Vainly checked out "WAU Manager" (Windows Automatic Updates Manager) at carifred.com/wau_manager/ and "ShutdownWithUpdates" at dennisbabkin.com/shutdownwithupdates/
Maybe I am overlooking a feature though.

    1) Updates are downloaded automatically - without installing
    2) At the end of the day I select shut down and install updates and shut off my monitor
    3) Go away
    4) Windows installs the updates
4.a.) If necessary restarts the PC
4.b. if there are any other updates to install, install those
    5) restarts the PC again and/or shutdown

All this unattended, so when I restart the PC, all updates have been installed.

    Q: Is this possible?

Right now, I have always been updating manually (Check for updates). Automatic download, etc. disabled.

In Settings, Windows Update, Advanced there is a setting "Get me up to date" which when enabled searches frequently for updates, downloads them and restarts so you are always updated with minimum or no waiting when restarting/shutdown. But this can restart your computer at any time without a warning before you have time to save your work! If you usually leave your computer on to complete some tasks overnight a sudden restart will stop whatever the computer was doing. I leave it on for downloads or video rendering, so a sudden restart would interrupt this so I never enable this setting. On the contrary I enable the "Notify me when a restart is required to finish updating" to prevent it restarting automatically.

    Thanks a lot!

In my case I would like the updates apply only at shutdown, unattended, i.e. Windows should take care of the required reboots (if necessary) and in the end shut down, after (all) the update(s), all by itself.
Including optional updates as long as it involves Windows 10.

If your working day is predictable then that is more or less what setting active hours does. Windows does not complete updates until the time is right.
    Settings, Update, Change active hours

It's not quite what you asked for.

    All the best,

So far, i've been getting by with updates using the official update hiding cab file and other steps, but i decided to fiddle with WAU Manager again. downloaded a fresh copy, and on its settings, i clicked the "disable windows automatic update and use WAU instead", checkbox, clicked save and apply, closed it, and reopened it, and.....that checkbox was unchecked

i feel like i already know the answer, but i just need it confirmed: is there any real way to stop windows automatic updates, solely, with third party tools anymore, or has windows, once and for all, killed that avenue?

Have you tried this (related to FlightSettingsMaxPauseDays) already?
It is working on my machine.
    Where did the settings go?

I've just installed WAU Manager and it does seem an excellent tool - wish I'd explored it before. I'd previously relied on Group Policy Editor to keep Windows 10 Pro updates in check but the latest Windows 10 Updates (Jan 2024) include Security Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5034441) which downloaded but won't install (Error 0x80070643) and I wanted to hide this Update for the moment, the reason being that it seems this may be a widespread issue related to the RE partition and I don't want to mess with that at the moment!

Just two quick questions, please - (1) Whenever I bring up the WAU Manager Dashboard, the option to disable the built-in Windows Update is always blank despite my having ticked and used the Save and Apply button previously - is that normal? - (2) Having previously used GPE from Brink's excellent tutorial to gain some control over the Update process, will I need to undo those changes or will WAU Manager ignore those, provided the option to disable built-in Windows Updates is successfully applied in WAU Manager?

    UPDATE:

I think I've answered my own questions. Going into Group Policy Editor and and disabling Configure Automatic Updates seems to solve the issue of the disappearing checkmark in WAU Manager Dashboard.

Thank you for all the help and reassurance this forum provides and a Happy New Year to you all.

    Hello everyone,

a bit off-topic, but since one tool is mentioned directly in the tutorial, I'll be cheeky and post it here:
If I get it right, there are basically three tools that are mentioned regularly when it comes to manually managing Windows updates.
The most current version with date in brackets:

    WAU Manager (3.5.1.0, 2023-21-12)
    Windows Update MiniTool (WUMT) (2022-04-22)
    WuMgr (1.1, 2019-12-11)

Is there somewhere a comparison of these tools?
Or is one clearly superior to the other for reasons (functionality, usability, updates...)?
WuMgr seems to be no longer being developed, so should I only give the last two remaining a look?

    Thanks and greetings,
    Martin

Whatever works for me is good. I still use Microsoft's Windows Update Show/Hide Tool even in Windows 11 to hide (block) unwanted updates with the exception of some computers that I get an error message that it could not load. I use WAU there.
