If the service is currently running, then yeah you'll also need to stop it. Please read the tutorial I posted. It will show you how to. :)

So to disable the Windows Update service with Command Prompt, I should run the following commands:

Code:

net stop wuauserv
sc config "wuauserv" start=disabled

While, to enable its:

Code:

sc config "wuauserv" start=auto

Right?

'Automatically check for updates and just notify you when updates are available' is impossible in my Home Edition due to the absence of Local Group Policy Editor, so I use the following VBScript to make it possible after setting all connections as metered.

I hope someone would have a look at it and tell me whether it can be improved.

If you like, you could use step 3 in OPTION TWO to set the group policy via a .reg file instead of using some .vbs file from an unknown Chinese site you had linked to.

I am the Chinese guy who created the unknown .vbs file. Option two does not work in my Home Edition, so I have to resort to VBScript. I apologize if my link was in contravention of a forum rule.

No worries. We usually just remove links for a download from an unknown source for safety purposes.

Did you restart the computer after doing OPTION TWO to apply it?

Option two says 'This option will not work in Windows 10 Home'.

Before I read this tutorial, I already tried using gpedit.msc and editing Registry, both of which were intended for Home Edition, and both of which did not work at my end. Recently I downloaded a VBScript from gallery.technet.microsoft.com and then modified it so that it will not download and install anything but notify me when updates are available.

My mistake. It should have been OPTION FOUR for a metered connection in Home edition instead.

I use a metered connection, which prevents Windows Update from automatically checking for updates.
That's why I need the VBSscript scheduled to check for updates.
