No problem. Yeah, Windows 10 will automatically download and install Windows Updates.

Other than this tutorial (not applicable to Home edition), you can also use the one below to at least get a notification to schedule a restart if one is needed afterwards.

"Yeah, Windows 10 will automatically download and install Windows Updates" but i changed the settings in local strategies so that it notifies me before installing AND downloading.. So why not still?! Regarding the other thread, i can't choose that setting, it's greyed..

Yep, if you disable automatic updates using OPTION 1 or 2 on the first page, it prevents you from being able to change the settings in the other tutorial.

If you have Windows 10 Home, then you will only be able to stop automatic updates by using OPTION FOUR (if applicable) or OPTION FIVE. OPTION FIVE will however completely disable Windows Update, and updates will still be automatically downloaded and installed the next time you enable OPTION FIVE again to be able to check for updates as needed.

I have PRO and all i want (since more if not possible) is to have notifications (tray icon, pop up..) to tell me when there are updates/when they are downloaded. I don't have any of these right now.

I'm afraid that Windows 10 just doesn't notify that you have updates to install since it will automatically do so by default. Windows will only notify you when updates have been installed instead.

That's ironic because I want the opposite: I keep getting notifications of new updates, and I find it disruptive and annoying. I use 10 Pro also, and even after switching my group policy settings to option 2, somehow Windows update still downloaded and installed the latest cumulative update. A few days back, it actually brought up a fullscreen (alpha transparent) overlay that I couldn't dismiss on my tablet except to click the Check for Updates button (or something along those lines; I wanted to screencap it, but because of the overlay, I was unable to access my screencap software on my tablet).

And today again, it seemed to automatically download and update on it's own again, despite my settings and without me manually checking for updates. I've since opted for Option 5 from this tutorial, and disabled Windows Update services altogether. Hopefully those notifications won't bother me anymore.

    Still clobbering Devices.
I don't know if you [Shawn] or others here have ANY voice at MS, but this issues stops me cold from recommending/installing Windows 10 for any business user [SOHO in my case]. I cannot ask an Attorney to become a tech and it is unethical to obfuscate such a glaring issue. it would ruin my rep, and should

as of today, fresh from the MS Support Chat Desk:

    Hello vfoster,

Just to note, that will completely disable Windows Update. You'll need to enable the service again when ready to install updates.

    Hello Cognus,

If you install Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise for them, they will be able to have a bit more control to disable automatic updates using this tutorial. You still don't have the ability to natively select which updates to install though.
