Hello DCS, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

Yes, disabling the Windows Update service will completely prevent Windows Update from working until you enable the service again.

A homegroup is not required to get updates from PCs on your network, but a homegroup will help make sure your network settings are set properly to allow this.

The thumbs.db issue should be posted in a new thread though.

    Thanks Brink.

Is there a way to force a PC to obtain updates from a network PC, or do you just hook them up and hope for the best?

    Thx.

    DCS,

Other than setting what you want, there's nothing else to be done. :)

Running Windows 10 Pro. I have both group policy set to notify, and have also tried running the .reg file, but Windows Update is still only giving me the options of either Notify to restart or Automatic

    Hello thelight, :)

Do you have the red message at the top of your advanced options like below?

    Hello

    Yes, I do.

Sorry I should have noted on the first post that the .reg file has previously worked but for some reason my settings have reverted back to automatic.

    thanks

If you still have the red message, then the policy is enabled for what you set.

So even though it is not saying ' notify to download' in that area, it will actually notify to download?

Have Microsoft changed something, as the first time I set this up the windows update app changed to reflect my group policy settings

If it says what's in the left screenshot, you should be good to go.

Please go ahead and post a screenshot showing what you are seeing instead to see if it may reveal anything. :)
