I already know how to make file associations. It does not answer my question.

Can you post a screen shot of your right click menu and the ensuing result of choosing New Rich Text Document, please?

If Jarte is your default application for opening .rtf files...

Add or Remove New context menu in Windows 10-000959.png

... then open your Registry and navigate to Computer\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.rtf
if .rtf doesn't have a ShellNew sub-key, create it, then make sure there is a NullFile String in the right hand pane...

Add or Remove New context menu in Windows 10-000958.png

if that doesn't work, something else is wrong or, you're using Jarte Portable.

the following Worked okay for the 20 or so default file types. I would like to an item to the right-click menu to open a new Microsoft word document.

I think I was able to do it in the past, but I sure can't now

    Best regards, Alan

    chunkyguru,

As a test, download and merge the .reg files for the listed Directory and Folder items in the table of OPTION TWO to see if they may help. They will restore their default associations and registry entries that will hopefully fix this for you.

    Hello Alan,

Usually, if you have Microsoft Word or Office installed, it will add the New > Microsoft Word Document to the context menu by default.

    Thank you Brink!

Had this problem appear out-of-the-blue where I couldn't create a new folder anywhere, in any way. Saw the reference to this tutorial, downloaded the file and ran it. Everything works perfectly again!
