I found this on link https://www.petri.com/change_to_no_sounds_sound_scheme_by_default showing you how to set the default key to .None no sound. I not sure how to set the default key to .None.

    reg add "HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\AppEvents\Schemes" /v "default" /t REG_SZ /D .None /f
    or
    reg add "HKEY_Current_USERS\AppEvents\Schemes" /v "default" /t REG_SZ /D .None /f
but that just adds another key under Schemes. how do you change the key to .None?

I assume you would just type ".None" without quotes.

You might see if option 3 below may be able to help some.

Okay, I remove the quotes around default and it added another string instead of changing the (Default) string,. Any ideas.

It should be created at the key below instead from the article you linked to.

    HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\AppEvents\Schemes

    I found it
    REG ADD "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes" /ve /T REG_SZ /D /F .None

This will change the default string to .None

Does this no longer work in 1909? I can't seem to get windows to let me rename the .mun file no matter what I try. I took ownership and gave full control, however, it did not work (even temporarily activated the super admin account to try that) but nothing. Unless I missed a step somewhere but I'm wondering if Microsoft just blocked it off entirely in 1909? Anyone else have this problem?

EDIT: Silly me, I went to try by taking ownership of the whole system resources folder and noticed it had read only checked...this must be off for it to work. But that did fix the problem

    I am using 1909.

    Play Startup sound is enabled.

I have followed the instructions which have worked OK until I got to step 15 [after I have booted into safe mode]. It says that I need permissions from my user [which is an administrative user].

I had to take ownership of the whole C:\Windows\SystemResources folder in order to be able to rename it. It then worked and I attached .bak to the end of imagere.dll.mun [imagere.dll.mun.bak], which worked OK.

I dragged and dropped the new file into the C:\Windows\SystemResources folder and re-booted.

    The .wav file doesn't play!
Also the date for the modified imageres.dll.mun is the SAME date as the original imageres.dll.mun file.

    Any ideas please?

    Thanks in advance.

    EDIT:

I restarted again and it now WORKS, very strange!

It doesn't however, start playing until I get to my desktop, is that how it should work [I presume it is!]?

    Hello Paul,

Normally, the startup sound will only play after you sign in to Windows 10. Of course, you are usually on your desktop in no time once you do sign in.

If you like, you could see if disabling the delay time for startup apps may allow it to play a bit sooner after signing in.

I created a .vbs script [sapi.spvoice] and saved it in the Users\MyUserProfile\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup folder that speaks after about 10 seconds once my desktop has opened. This works perfectly.

Obviously my custom Startup sound [.wav file], created using Resource Hacker, is saved in the C:\Windows\SystemResources folder.

I disabled the Startup delay. I re-booted the computer, and it didn't play the Startup sound [.wav file] any quicker [ I can live with this], but it DID speak straight away!

    A couple of questions please . . .

[1] Do I understand correctly that the Startup sound [.wav file] will ONLY play once I get to my Desktop, and NOT from the moment I login?

[2] Once I logout and then log back in, the Startup sound [.wav file] DOESN'T play. is there a way I can get it to run EVERY time I login please?

    Thanks in advance.
