    Sorry Brink,
it was my fault. I make a mistake. I was looking in the wrong folder.
I explain: in case you have moved the default OneDrive location if you look in the Userprofile folder located in the Desktop, you will find a "link" of the folder of OneDrive, but if you go to the default directory of the Userprofile you will not find the OneDrive folder.
My mistake was I was looking the OneDrive folder link located in the Userprofile folder in the Desktop.
If you see the folder of OneDrive in this location it dos't have the shortcut arrow, and this deceived me.

So this guide work, it was my error.

Sorry for that, and I hope that my English is understandable.

Nothing to be sorry about. I'm just happy it worked for what you wanted.

Merged My Documents with Onedrive before Onedrive started local backup

    Hello,
I thought I would be smart and made the location of "My Documents" folder location to be the c:\users\username\SkyDrive\Documents back at the beginning of Onedrive. So I didn't have to have two "Documents folders" or that they would be one in the same. I forgot what warning messages were given, but I think it said something about it couldn't be undone and did I want to merge the two together.

Anyway a newer feature of Onedrive Backup Important PC Folders Change Location of OneDrive Folder in Windows 10-2020-02-13_16-06-38.png

Manage folder backup and Onedrive now backs up Desktop Documents and Pictures.

Now every time I want to free up space. It moves stuff to the cloud and I get my free disk space. Later it seems that it synchs s it back down again.. and the free space disappears. Almost like it is caught in a circular motion.

So I am not sure if I should go through the recommended process for moving Onedrive or I should restore "My Documents" folder location? I don't want to lose any data either. Any guidance as to how to fix the issue I caused would be much appreciated.

Hello bknusa, and welcome to Ten Forums.

This is only for moving the OneDrive folder location to where you want it on your local computer. It will not affect the contents of this folder or what is stored online in the cloud.

It should be safe for you to move if wanted, but I would always recommend to back up anything you don't want to lose to another location first to be extra safe.

Yes of course. But what steps do I follow to reset the default system "My Documents" folder to c:\users\username instead of c:\users\username\skydrive folder? Do I unlink Onedrive first and stop it? Just not sure what to do first to get back to the default settings so that I can then go back and use the new feature of Onedrive. And hopefully stop the circular save to cloud and then it recopies the files back down.

You could use option 2 in the tutorial below to turn off backing up the Desktop, Documents, and Pictures folder to OneDrive.

Hey @Brink , I am just trying to get my head around the change folder location as it applies to using a mapped nas drive and using onedrive on several devices in the same lan.

If I mess this up it will bring chaos down upon me.

My working data files, i.e. those i want to access from any laptop or workstation, inside and outside my lan, amount to around 600gb, which none of my machines have available locally, so i set onedrive to download on demand. this is good, but far from ideal. there is an annoying lag on opening of larger files and any sync issues can become very confusing. Plus I just would prefer to have my master set on my hardware.

if i understand the tutorial, i could have the onedrive folder on my nas, thereby giving me the space to have all files available locally, but would all the machines be able to use that same onedrive folder on my nas drive, or would each machine have to have its own onedrive folder on the nas? that would lead to 5 x 600gb of duplicated data in my case, but i canīt get my head around the consequences of them all using the same folder of originals, for instance if a folder was already open on one workstation how would onedrive deal with an attempt to open the same file on another? anyway, i suspect you may tell me it isnīt even possible in the first place, so your guidance hugely appreciated to save me making a shambles of things.

    Regards

    Nick

    Hello Nick,

I just tested on my system, and unfortunately OneDrive will not let me use a NAS for its folder location.

I was thinking about creating a symbolic link for this as an alternative, but got "Local NTFS volumes are required to complete the operation.".

You may be able make your OneDrive folder a share to give access to your other network computers.

thatīs an interesting idea for a workaround, keep it all local on the workstation with the most storage and effectively share with myself on the network.

    thanks pal
