    I don't recall ever changing it to the 5 letters. The user profile folder has always been "drsto" until the last few days when I tried to change everything to the full word, Mickey. I only saw "micke" when I got the name from wmic useraccount, but the registry has always shown "drsto" when I checked. It's certainly possible that a few months ago, shortly after I got the laptop, I found your tutorial and tried to change it but ran into problems so abandoned it.

    Could this be some kind of alias situation since I started with a Microsoft Account with an email address starting with drsto and added a second email starting with micke? If I follow the instructions for changing the profile to Mickey am I apt to run into all these same problems again? I certainly don't want to go through all these hours trying to fix it, so I may just leave it. "micke" is much closer than "drsto".

    Thank you again for your patience.

    You could attempt to rename the user profile folder to "Mickey" as outlined in the tutorial.

    If you run into issues again, check the same registry locations to make sure they have the correct name in the path.

    When I check on the full name and name for the user account, I see the true Microsoft Account name is the full name and "micke" is the name. In the UI I don't see "micke" anywhere (yet anyway). In the Registry I see a mix depending on where I look. When I read the instructions for changing the profile name again, I'm not sure that will do anything since the name is already changed everywhere except when I check using the CMD prompt and WMIC useraccount.

    I was thinking that I could follow the instructions here Change User Name of Account in Windows 10 | Tutorials but it seems that I need to switch to a local account from my Microsoft Account (I did unlink the PC) and I don't think I can't create a local account with the same name. I really don't want to start over with a new account.

    So I guess I'll leave things as they are. We got things 95% there. Thanks for sticking with me.

    I don't blame you. It's not worth risking messing it all up again, and having to start over on piecing it back together again.

    If you still need help with anything on this, please just let me know.

    Update: I had to uninstall Dropbox and the reinstall it to make the syncing work again but all else seems fine.

    Today I was setting up some other files to automatically sync using some new (new to me) software and when comparing files I see juntions to the "drsto" AppData/Local and Roaming folders. Should I be concerned with these?

    I deleted the user folder for "drsto" the other day once it looked like I was done making all the changes and before I restored Dropbox.

    @MickeyCT,

    As long as they are working, I wouldn't worry about the junctions.

    Hello,

    I have been using Windows 10 for a few years and I intend to follow your guide Move Location of Desktop Folder in Windows 10 to move desktop location from c drive to d drive where I store data. My purpose is that I tend to save files on desktop so I am worried if one day my Windows 10 failed/corrupted or the c drive hard drive is faulty my files will be gone so I guess if desktop location is at d drive in another hard disk will be safer and I can reinstall Windows 10 easier in future.

    After searching for solutions, I come across this guide How To Move Desktop, Downloads & Documents Folders To Another Drive In Windows 10 and I see the steps is almost exactly the same as your guide Move Location of Desktop Folder in Windows 10

    How To Move Desktop, Downloads & Documents Folders To Another Drive In Windows 10 bottom comments have many users posted warning not to follow the steps as it will be a mess.

    May I know is it safe to follow your guide Move Location of Desktop Folder in Windows 10 since it is the same steps as How To Move Desktop, Downloads & Documents Folders To Another Drive In Windows 10 ? Will I encounter any problems?

    My PC is working fine now. I just hope to move once successfully and do not wish to have other problems after moving.

    Thanks a lot.

    Hello @comcom,

    It's safe to follow the tutorial as long as it's done step by step without any mistakes made.

    However, I would always recommend to create a system image before doing so just to be safe so you will have an easy way to undo this if it should go sideways on you.

    Since your main goal is keeping a backup copy of the files on your desktop, you might see if having your Desktop folder saved to OneDrive by default may work for this. This way a copy will always be on OneDrive if needed.

    Just a thought about this, some programs won't install if not finding the default locations of folders, may have to use a Custom install of them.

    Historical note: back some versions ago of Windows the default location of downloads was set as the desktop [we were subtly conditioned to the process], don't recall when the developers/programmers decided to have a clean desktop and changed that.

    @comcom -

    Just my opinion -

    If you know to how make a complete, verified, restorable backup image of your entire system there is really no need for this.
    Obviously you need to be regimented on the backup frequency.

    It's a cleaner way.
