Happy to have joined: it's an amazing place.

I tried that tutorial but I think the fact that there were already storage folders on the HDD from before the reinstall might be the problem. I'll have another go.

    Thanks

Hey Shawn, I just finished finally rebuilding my "old" 6700K system in my In W§in case(I needed drives for it, and got a couple of 250GB SSds for 55€ each) and set the system up.

I, for some reason(at the time I didn't know why) had Pictures and Documents folder, using OneDrives ones, and couldn't get the system to use D: drive like it was for Downloads and Music and Videos.

After screwing around for a few hours, and trying repeatedly to move them to D:, and looking at my OneDrive settings, I finally noticed something I had missed: "Protect your important folders" was turned on!
    Now turned off

After turning it off, the move worked

I thought I would post in case someone has the problem too, and save you some headaches finding the cause(hopefully it's only that).

    You're welcome Shawn.
I was so frustrated, and was about to give up, and noticed it while I was comparing my Windows settings between both machines.

nvm i figured what i needed. Once moved it becomes "personal" and thus i have to retrieve documents from reg instead of %userprofile%
    FOR /F "tokens=3 " %%G IN ('REG QUERY "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders" /v "Personal"') DO (SET userdocumentsdir="%%G")

I have relocated my Documents folder using your tutorial successfully. This is my first PC that has a 128GB SSD and a separate internal 1 Terabyte standard hard drive. I followed the advice on the forum to relocate my Personal Folders to the D: Data drive from the C: SSD to free up space on the SSD. Regarding the documents folder. Previously Ive only ever had one drive so when moving files in and out of the Documents Folder Ive always been used to selecting the Documents folder link under This PC from the left hand pane or frequently I just clicked This PC and selected the Documents folder under Folders In the central pane.
The Documents folder is now relocated to the D: Data drive. So when accessing or cut and pasting into or from the Documents folder is it advisable to now go directly to the D:/Documents folder and select it there as a Dell techie suggested to me or can the Documents link under This PC in the left hand pane or Documents link in the central pane underneath Folders after clicking on This PC or Documents link under Quick Access also still be used for moving files in and out of the Documents Folder at its new location D:/Documents on the Data drive?

    Hello,

If the "Location" tab in properties of the Documents folder in "This PC" shows the "D" location, then it wouldn't matter which one you select.

The real issue is what location may have already been selected in some app that may not automatically use the new location, and would have to be manually changed in the app.

If I understand you correctly..this is a reason why Ive been reluctant to relocate my personal folders from their default location on the SSD drive over to the D: Data drive. I wouldn't begin to know how to manually change the selected location in an App. Ive always wondered if it will stop certain programmes from functioning. For instance I have a game that creates its own folder automatically during installation in Documents where it saves the saved games into. Am I going to create future problems for myself by relocating my Personal Folders to the D: Data dive?
I have only recently got the PC and Im going to do a clean installation using the Media Creation Tool. Im trying to decide on the best strategy for using my SSD drive bearing in mind it has limited space. It is only a 128gb SSD so ive already decided that it is probably best to use it for Windows and just a few small applications and install all my games (Steam gaming platform etc) to the 1 Terabyte standard internal hard drive. What would be your advice Shawn?
