I haven't found a way to change the default icon for all removable drives yet. Only the method in this tutorial for individual drives.

USB Disk appears under Removable data drives in BitLocker.
Hello George,
You should be able to create it on your desktop first, and then move it to where you want afterwards instead.
@Brink
Creating the autorun.inf file for my C:/ Drive icon elsewhere,
then moving it to the root location worked.
Thanks.
I had to create a registry entry,
to be able to change my DVD/CD RW (F:) Drive icon.
I don't know why I even have this drive,
because I haven't used a disk in a very long time.
I guess it's okay to have it, nonetheless.
If just wanting to remove the icon have you checked the Hide or Show Empty Drives feature? File Explorer, View tab, far right and Options, View tab then just below Hidden files and folders.
I used to change drive icons in older versions of Windows but the method relied upon having autoexec.bat and config.sys in the boot process then creating the icon and necessary file. I just used the standard icon but different colors.
And a file would probably have to exist on each drive which would require it being on all Optical Discs to be effective.

I was referring to,
having an actual optical drive physically installed.
Which looks something like this image below.
When not physically installed into a PC.
The appearance of the optical drive's icon,
within Windows Explorer isn't an issue for me.
Is this what you're talking about?
You could use an image of the drive, use a graphics editor to change the size then save or convert to an .ico Icon file.I was referring to,
