    Yep, it has all to do with file access times. Checking each and every ~250k files with Defender, during Windows upgrade or .esd preparation, takes a really long time. Thanks for clocking this.
    As an experiment, I tried turning off Defender during an upgrade, and it made no difference as far as I could tell to upgrade time.

    One tip for those running uuptoiso on a virtual machine. It is well known copying upgrade files to host and doing it on host can be much quicker for less powerful devices. However, if using Hyper-V, the files are already on the host really inside the virtual hard drive. Just mount vhd from disk management and files are on host - no need to copy anything.

    I do the same when I want to create a Macrium Image Backup (for redeployment purposes) as it means I can use my Macrium Seven Home licence.

    I never knew that the process of UUP to ISO was a time consuming feat for some people until very recently. Since I have my system set up with 4 separate SSDs, it is really a breeze on my system. I guess only three SSDs are used in my UUP to ISO conversion through an Intel Haswell chip set to high performance.

    1. SSD for C: drive only
    2. SSD2 for all download files
    3. SSD3 for storage

    With this set up the entire process takes about 4 minutes total, not bad really.

    And your 4th drive? I have no problem on my newest computer since it has 16 threads so iso is fast. But other computers are slower. It took 15 minutes on an older AMD chip with 12 threads. — really surprised. Then my old laptop takes forever.

    My 4th SSD is for my Grand Daughter's videos and I have 2 spinning hard drives for music. I have a total of 6 storage devices hooked up to this stupid machine.

    SSD for videos seems an overt luxury.

    POSH= Port Out, Starboard Home

    She is 8 months old, she loves high tech stuff so I gave her the SSD and she let me keep a spinner.

    Good for you. Why not? Have all you want — life’s to short for deprivation.

    Is there any way to specify command line arguments to the utility to have the conversion performed unattendedly from a batch file?

    It depends...if the videos are just laying there and only ready for streaming, it might be considered an overkill. :)

    BUT, if it's a video editing work drive, then speed over size can be quite important.

    Sure but even with video editing, the bottleneck is usually the cpu power. I find e.g. converting a file from wmv to mp4 takes same time near enough where on an hdd or ssd. If you have a really powerful CPU, the difference is probably more discernable.
