ESD to ISO - Create Bootable ISO from Windows 10 ESD File
ESD is still available from a Windows update under some circumstances - for instance if you have a device with a fixed small amount of primary storage, e.g. 32 GB, and need to have attached removable storage to complete the update download and, after download and pre-install-processing, there will be $Windows.~BT and $Windows.~TMP folders on the removable storage, and the Image file In $Windows.~TMP will be a 4-image ESD, with Windows setup media, Windows Setup PE, Windows PE -Windows RE (Boot.wim files), and Image 4 is either Pro or Core (Home) image, depending on the edition of the original OS. In $Windows.~BT\sources, install.esd will be the single image of Pro or Core as in image 4 in the ESD from $windows.~TMP

ESDs are used since typically they are are maximally compressed to save bandwidth and disk space, although Wim files may also have maximal compression applied during creation.

The last time this was experienced by me was with 15058, updating a rather tightly fitted 10.0.14393 1607.953 Which had not been able to update for some time due to the lack of space.,

That makes sense. I've had to increase the (nominal) disk space of empty VMs I upgrade from 20GB to 22GB recently (they take about 7GB space). 15058 asked for another 10GB disk, 15063 didn't.

Indeed it did. Also archived the upgrade files, for later study.

I found that when I zipped the UUP files, I could not un-zip them, due to path too long error, so I stick to using them from where they are before restart, or from Windows.old after install.

    Which archiver did you use?

I tried 7-Zip and also tried DISM. I could copy the files into the archive file, but I could not restore them, even if I tried to do it in a folder at the root of a drive. I'm not 100% sure that every file was captured, as I showed over 53,000 files when I was trying this and there did not seem to be that many in the zip file. I prefer to leave the files unaltered and have always been able to successfully use them, even from Windows.old. Cutting and pasting them elsewhere (on the same drive) also works, as you know. But then you have to put them back, if you want to see Microsoft's process complete.
