I have just done an upgrade install of CU and could not even find Defender. Cortana couldn't locate it and it was absent from the 'All Apps' list (Shawns second picture above). Everything else was there, just no Defender.

On a hunch I tried a restart and lo and behold, it has now appeared.

    Ha ha ha :)

If you've any ideas on my other issue posted over in 'Browsers' then I'm all ears I'm actually wondering if something could be configurable in Defender that might be at the root cause of this latest problem. Someones just posted, I'm off to have a look......

Hope your installs/upgrades went OK anyway Cliff.

Edit... browser issue mended now :)

I noticed tonight that windows defender or the windows defender security center both are not in my all apps list. When I start ms services it shows that defender is running. I just can't seem to open the security center. When I try to via the settings window, nothing at all happens. No error message, nothing. I rebooted and still nothing.

My calculator and photo viewer also quit opening but right now I'm more concerned about windows defender since I don't have an alternate av on my system.

If you have a serious number of Apps and windows features not working then it implies there is some underlying corruption of your system files. The quickest way to sort this out is to follow this tutorial. Following it exactly will ensure you keep all your documents and settings. It effectively reinstalls your current version of windows and keeps everything you had previously installed as if you were doing an upgrade.

My normal Windows user account doesn't have admin privileges. When I open the Windows Security Dashboard, it won't even show me which file it identified as a threat ("Details") without a UAC prompt. I find it inconvenient to repeatedly respond to UAC prompts to manage the results of security scans and would rather not log out and log back in on an admin accout to do so. Is there any way to start the Windows Security Dashboard with admin privileges, so I only have *one* UAC prompt?
I thought I could do it by creating a shortcut with the advanced "Run as administrator" option checked, but

don't seem to work anymore. The linked page says:
    Code:
You do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:
        The page has been removed.
Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page.
If you are a trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.
    and I don't find msascui.exe on my Windows 10 20H2 system.
I also tried creating a link by dragging "Windows Security" from the Start menu onto the desktop, but the resulting link has all options on the "Properties - Advanced" tab greyed out.
How can I run the Windows Security Dashboard with admin privileges, so I won't have to log out and back in or respond to a UAC prompt for each operation I want to conduct in the dashboard?

    Hello,

The Windows Defender shortcut is no longer valid in Windows 10, but you can create a Windows Security shortcut below instead.

Thanks for the quick and helpful response! The shortcut created from your tutorial at least allowed me to mark it "Run as administrator". This in turn allows me to at least look at the listed items without answering a UAC prompt for each one, but I still had to respond to 3 UAC prompts to restore a quarantined file! ;-{ ugh!

P.S. I rejoiced too soon: as soon as I closed the Windows Security Dashboard I had opened with admin privileges, Windows Security quarantined the file I had just restored *again*!
I don't find any "Allow" option, so I can only hope that it doesn't happen again.
Is the lack of an "Allow" option due to the fact the Windows Security considers the threat "Severe"?
