How to Change the PIN for your Account in Windows 10

Windows Hello in Windows 10 enables users to sign in to their device using a PIN (Personal Identification Number). You can use this PIN to sign in to Windows, apps, and services.

One important difference between a password and a Hello PIN is that the PIN is tied to the specific device on which it was set up. That PIN is useless to anyone without that specific hardware. Someone who steals your password can sign in to your account from anywhere, but if they steal your PIN, they'd have to steal your physical device too!

Even you can't use that PIN anywhere except on that specific device. If you want to sign in on multiple devices, you have to set up Hello on each device.

For more information about PIN, see: Why a PIN is better than a password (Windows 10)

When you sign in to Windows 10 with PIN, you only need to type your PIN number without pressing Enter.

This tutorial will show you how to change the PIN for your account in Windows 10.

EXAMPLE: Sign-in to Windows 10 with PIN

    Here's How:

1 Open the Settings app, and click/tap on the Accounts icon.

2 Click/tap on Sign-in options on the left side, click/tap on Windows Hello PIN on the right side, and click/tap on the Change button. (see screenshot below)

3 Enter your current PIN at the top, enter a new PIN number you want for your account, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshots below)

If you like, you can check the Include letters and symbols box for your PIN.

4 When finished, you can close Settings if you like.

    That's it,

How do I get to settings, if I can't log in?

I need to change my PIN as my pc no longer recognizes it, and yet... if I can't get past the sign in screen, there appears to be no way to get to "settings"?
I've also attempted to enter a password, which it also fails to recognize.
I'm not a very techy person and have been all over the web trying to fix this problem, to no avail. Can someone here provide some instruction?

Hello Welindsey, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

Do you have another administrator account that you could sign in to?

If so, then you could sign in to that account to change your account's password from so that you can sign in to your account and change your PIN afterwards.

In that case, you could use OPTION FOUR in the tutorial below to enable the built-in Administrator account at boot. Afterwards, you could sign in to that account to do so.

    Hello Richard,

It's should still be 4 by default unless specified differently.

Thank you, I guess it was a glitch since I had not changed gpedit or regedit. I reset it with your tutorial and all is well.

Strange, here too! Tried to put my PC to sleep yesterday, my PC didn't knew my PIN. Just clicked that I forgot my PIN, typed in the old one, checked and all is fine again. A PC with amnesia?
