Quick update. I've made 3 calls to MS (which to their credit they pick up on immediately), however I just get escalated up the 'difficulty' ladder, and the worst part of all is that the voices are mostly unintelligible and sound like they are on a cordless phone where reception keeps dropping. You just can not decipher what they are saying.

I was so frustrated that I quickly re-installed W8.1 on its original PC (no problem) and then used slmgr.exe to un-activate it. W8.1 now reports it is not activated, however it will still not allow the key to be reused on another PC. I get the same 'the key is already in use' message.

MS also kept asking for me to run slui 3 which doesn't seem to be a valid command.

    Hello Mooly, :)

That should be the same as using OPTION FOUR.

    Thanks for the reply Shawn.

I'm still seeing the same message when I input the W8.1 code. I even went as far as quickly putting 8.1 back on the original PC earlier today, just so that I could manually deactivate the key using slmgr.vbs /upk. It said it was successfully deactivated. As a double check I then went into 'System' and confirmed that it said 'not activated' which it did.

The /upk key will only uninstall the key and deactivate Windows on that PC. It doesn't clear the activation on Microsoft's activation servers.

You should be able to activate by phone (slui /4) though.

Not working. I enter the 9 blocks of digits which are accepted. A recorded message then say to wait while an activation code is generated, which is then followed by another message saying the key was not accepted. That takes me to the phone help which I've tried 3 or 4 times already. I'll have to try again tomorrow or next week and use a landline phone which might be more 'intelligible'. The audio quality from the operators is so poor that I can't make out what they are saying half the time.

    Honestly, it s l ke t y a e tal I g on a co r less ph ne wh n wa k ng ar u d

This product key is being used on another PC. Please try a different key. Error code: 0x803FA071

You need to transfer your Windows 8/8.1 license to a new computer, because the automated phone activation system does NOT work on Windows 10, if you see an error message that says "This product key is being used on another PC" and if you are using a Windows 8/8.1 product key.

So you will first need to perform a clean installation of Windows 8.1 to a new computer (enter your Windows 8/8.1 product key) and then activate your copy of Windows 8.1 via the automated phone activation system (select the "Call support" option). When Windows 8.1 is activated, just do a fresh Windows 10 install (enter your Windows 8/8.1 product key), or you can upgrade Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. After the Windows 10 installation is complete, Windows 10 will be automatically activated online.

    Hello Nipax, :)

Windows 10 can now be directly activated with a Windows 7 or Windows 8/8.1 product key that you have upgraded from to Windows 10.

That won't work, Mooly will get the same error message.

This is what Mooly is going to have to do first on the new PC once they have an activated Windows 8.1 on it and Mooly will probably have to use phone activation get activate the Windows 8.1. Once the upgrade to Windows 10 is successfully done and activated, then the hardware ID for the new PC will be saved on Microsoft activation servers and a clean install of Windows 10 can be done.

Unless they are getting the error message "This product key is being used on another PC". Then, apparently, they have to go back and install Windows 8.1. Activate it via phone activation. Then upgrade in place to Windows 10.
