As a variation to option 2, if you have a second drive with plenty of capacity, rather than shrinking C drive, you can create a folder called image on second drive, and a sub folder scratch, then use something like:

    dism /capture-image /imagefile:E:\Image\install.wim /capturedir:C:\ /ScratchDir:E:\image\Scratch /name:"ASUS Pro 10" /compress:maximum /bootable

I tried this and it works. It is easier than messing around shrinking C drive, creating new partition etc, and reversing when finished, but of course, you need a second drive.

As an aside, I boot into Macrium Reflect Winpe mode, navigate to above command in a batch file and run it.

What explains this after doing the mods
    Code:
    Something went wrong.

    But you can try again.

    Warning to everyone.
This command line command provided copies the latest DISM files & seems to IGNORE the WIM file in the folder.
I verified this because I 3 times tried to create an ISO with custom files based on an OLDER version of windows WIM file from 2020.
Every single time I try to boot the ISO it says to me windows 10 version September 2021 (21H1) & after install confirmed it was 21h1

SO this method is NOT working for making WIM file of older. Maybe it's ignoring the wim file entirely. Not sure.

But I used: anyburn app to edit an ISO of an older version of windows & just add my install.wim using that

Testing now to see if it worked

Hi and thank you for this guid.
One question, if I use option 2, it states you must not open any programs, however, some of the programs I want to install have to be opened to update, is this not possible to do?

I figured I would post the solution to my problem here in case it helps anyone in the future. I was receiving the "Windows could not display the images available for installation" error and tried every solution I could find here to no avail. What I ended up doing is getting the version of imagex with a UI, called GImageX. I open that as a normal program in windows, go to the change tab, and add a name, description, and an SKU flag to my custom install.wim for what version I'm using. It looks like the flag is what I was missing, no matter how many times I rebuilt with the command it wasn't working. GImagex is a way easier option as you can visually edit all of the details of the install.wim file. Hope this helps someone!

Hello Kari, thank you for writing this guide, it's been a great help. I've installed the image to my USB stick with Rufus and booted into it, however after selecting a language and keyboard layout, I'm given the following error message: "Windows could not display the images available for installation." Where am I going wrong?

[1] I assume that you meant that you burned the image using Rufus?
[2] Are you trying to install using Legacy - MBR or UEFI - GPT?
[3] Are you trying to install the LATEST version or a PREVIOUS version?
[4] Where did you get the ISO from?
[5] Is there any reason why you did NOT use the Media Creation Tool?
[6] Did you disconnect ALL other drives FIRST?
[7] Did you delete ALL Partitions leaving a single unallocated Partition?

Thank you! To answer the questions

[1] Yes, Rufus is the program I burned the ISO with
[2] I am using UEFI GPT
[3] I downloaded this ISO this morning...
    [4] ...directly from Microsoft https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/soft...load/windows10
[5] Do you mean for burning the ISO onto the USB? I find Rufus to be simple and reliable
[6] I did not, but the error occurs before I can even choose a drive or partition to install to
[7] On the machine, no I did not but I did not think that to be necessary, and it is not mentioned in the guide. On the USB stick, Rufus completely reformats the entire disk anyway

I found that the problem was that I was building from the Windows 10 supplied by HP. Creating my image from a clean install of Win10 solved my problem. Thanks for weighing in Paul and BusTech :)
