How to Add or Remove 'Open with Notepad' Context Menu in Windows 10

Adding "Open with Notepad" to the context menu of all files will allow you to quickly open that file with Notepad without setting Notepad to be the default app for that file type.

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove Open with Notepad from the context menu of all files for all users in Windows 10.

While you must be signed in as an administrator to add or remove the "Open with Notepad" context menu, all users will be able to use the context menu item.

EXAMPLE: "Open with Notepad" context menu

    Here's How:

2 To Add "Open with Notepad" to Context Menu of All Files

    A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

    Add_Open_with_Notepad_to_context_menu.reg

    Download

3 To Remove "Open with Notepad" from Context Menu of All Files

    This is the default setting.

    A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

    Remove_Open_with_Notepad_from_context_menu.reg

    Download

4 Save the .reg file to your desktop.

5 Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

6 When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

7 You can now delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.

    That's it,
    Shawn

Open with notepad - Applies to?

This tweak adds "Open with Notepad" to a lot of different file types, some of which already open in Notepad if you select "Edit". Having both "Edit" and "Open with Notepad" doing the same thing is redundant, and unnecessarily clutter's the context menu.

Before I spend time trying to add "AppliesTo" to this tweak, do you have one already?

    Hello Sam,

I currently do not have a version with "AppliesTo" to restrict it.
