How to Reset Google Chrome to Default in Windows
There may be times when you may need to just reset Chrome settings to default, or completely reset Chrome to default like when first installed.
This tutorial will show you how to either reset Chrome settings to default or completely reset Chrome to default like when first installed for your account in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.
- Option One: To Only Reset Chrome Settings to Default
- Option Two: To Completely Reset Chrome to Default
EXAMPLE: Google Chrome completely reset to default
You can restore your browser settings in Chrome at any time. You might need to do this if apps or extensions you installed changed your settings without your knowledge. Your saved bookmarks and passwords won't be cleared or changed.
The following settings will change back to the default:
- Default search engine, which is changed back to Google.
- Homepage and tabs.
- The new tab page.
- Tabs you have pinned.
- Content settings, like letting a site show you pop-ups or use your microphone.
- Cookies and site data, like items in an online shopping cart.
- Extensions and themes.
Only the settings for the Chrome profile you are signed in to will be reset. Your new settings will apply across all computers or devices where you’re signed in to your active profile.
1. Open Google Chrome.
2. Click/tap on the More button, and click/tap on Settings. (see screenshot below)
If you like, you could also enter chrome://settings/resetProfileSettings into the address bar of Chrome and press Enter to directly open Reset settings at step 5.
3. Click/tap on the Advanced link at the bottom. (see screenshot below)
4. Click/tap on the Reset settings link in the Reset and clean up section. (see screenshot below)
5. Click/tap on Reset to confirm. (see screenshot below)
This option will do a full reset of Chrome for the current account in Windows.
This will include resetting all Chrome settings to default and deleting your profiles, themes, extensions, bookmarks, browsing history, passwords, cookies, and web form auto-fill information.
1. Close any open Google Chrome windows.
2. Open a command prompt.
3. Copy and paste the command below into the command prompt, and press Enter.
![]()
RD /S /Q "%LocalAppData%\Google\Chrome"
4. You can now close the command prompt if you like.
That's it,
Shawn
