It sounds like you're fine if it shows as turned on in option 1, but some confusion with the 3rd party program causing this issue.

    Shawn.
The PC took both options one and two and the icon now appears in the task bar albeit with a red cross, so that is an improvement. So are you saying that if I totally uninstall Comodo (not a 5 min job), Windows Defender Security Centre will then start to recognise that the Defender Firewall is active?

No guarantee on that, but it's worth a try.

Does it show Windows Firewall turned on like in the screenshot under step 2 of Option 1? If so, then it's active.

Yes, the information is the same so it is active. Icon in task bar disappeared today.

I will remove Comodo using their uninstall tool and let you know the results.

Thank you Shawn, that appears to have worked. Strange that despite turning everything off in Comodo there must have been something running in the background that the Defender Security Centre didn't like.
One final point if I may, what is the best option to ensure the Icon appears in the task bar. I can get it there by running MSASCuil.exe but it disappears after a restart? It is kinda reassuring to see a little green tick indicating all is OK.

    Great news.

The Windows Defender notification icon can sometimes be a bit buggy about always showing, but double check using the tutorial below to make sure it's turned on and enabled.

See Windows Defender Virus Test Failure

Is there a way of configuring Defender to its default settings without doing a clean install?

    Hello Steve,

I'm not aware of a way other than manually since anything Windows Defender is protected.
