Hello Ol Bab, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)
It sounds like you have some other issue at hand. If you haven't already, you might see if you may be able to after restarting the PC.

I've restarted many times over the week, usually to do with connection problems. No joy. Thank you.
There are so many things that are so damned "intuitive" that they just don't need/get a help entry (where? Where is help?). Instead I am sent to the whole darn web, 236,00 hits, and good luck figuring out which to look at. Rant off.
Ol Bab,
In that case, use the Find and Find next feature in Registry Editor to search for all instances of the HideIcons DWORD. There should be two. When found, modify each one's data value to be 0 (zero), then restart the PC to apply. This should show your desktop icons again.
I did the regedit. The first entry was already 0. Changed the second and rebooted. And rebooted, and rebooted and... No internet connect. [This has been been preventing logon since day 1, for some reason.] Left the house for 3 hours, and all fixed except, still no icons on the desktop and right click on desktop still completely ignored.
Would you advise I change register back?
You might see if doing a system restore using a restore point dated before this started to hopefully undo it.
System Restore Windows 10
Tried it. Said something was wrong, restore didn't happen, nothing deleted after all (I liked that part). Then even after 3 or 4 more reboots, no communication (like before). Just now, after 5 hours, the net reappeared. Like before. My best thought is a bad WIFI dongle, mangling the Win 10 install(s?) so win is sorta crippled.
