    @Brink
When I did my first manual upgrade to 20H2, the new "winver" display showed the latest Version and Build AND it showed "Licensed to [me]". I have now done my second upgrade to 20H2, with different results.

I opened Regedit and am browsing trying to find the Registered User field so I can enter my name, with no luck.
--It's no longer under Local Machine - Software - Microsoft - Windows NT - CurrentVersion (nor under Windows - CurrrentVersion, I checked that one on a whim)
--On my machine, it isn't under the Local Machine - System - Setup - Source OS either (see screenshot). These Source OS entries end with Version 1909, 9-7-2020, even though I moved on to Version 2004 and now 20H2.

Can you help me find this and fix this? I'd need clear and simple instructions because I don't mess with my registry except under strict supervision since I don't know what I'm doing.

    Hello @LaurieD227,

If you don't have the RegisteredOwner and RegisteredOrganization string values in the registry key below, you can manually add them to change what they say.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

I got the impression from this thread (Ztruker's post) that those keys had been moved, so I wasn't sure where to try to put them or how.

UPDATE: I just looked at the registry of Laptop #1, and confirmed that it has the Registered Owner and Registered Organization keys right there under Windows NT/CurrentVersion so I have a working example to follow. Thanks!

    Laurie,

I realise you have resolved this now but, just for completeness, not all computers have those two entries in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion by default so they might have to be created if you want them.

They do not serve any particular purpose within the OS. You can write whatever you want in those entries and change them as much as you want.

The entries can be deleted if you want to revert them to default.
    - You can just select RegisteredOrganization, right-click and select Delete.
    - Same for RegisteredOwner

    Denis -

Thanks so much for your message. I was initially wondering if somehow MS would think my version of Windows was no longer licensed, so it's good to know this is a 'cosmetic' field.

    Here's my ongoing concern:
--those entries used to be there, as I could always see my name in the Licensed To section of the page showing the Version and Build until today.
--now, all of a sudden, they disappeared with the upgrade to 20H2, and I don't know why that happened. (I hate it when that happens.)
--If they were deleted in error, to me that means other errors might have happened as well - errors that I haven't yet discovered although I'm trying to troubleshoot now.
(So far, SFC found some issues that SCANNOW repaired, and DISM CheckHealth and ScanHealth both found no issues.)

So, that's why I'm sticking with this for the time being.

Windows updates, particular Version updates, can overwrite things without telling us. It is not that an error has occurred, it's that we are not important enough to be told what's going on.

I have three computers and they were all in different [default] states when I first checked their RegisteredOrganization & RegisteredOwner entries [which was only a week or so ago when somebody else mentioned them].

I hope you don't waste too much time on the topic because I don't see any evidence of any error in what you've written.

I've updated the tutorial some to add more info and help with this.

Well, I'm pleased to have been of help but disappointed that you chose sensible example diagrams instead of mine.

That's comforting to know. As I've often said, I am NOT the mot technical person in the room, so I tend to take any error or issue seriously until someone who knows way more than me advises me differently.

The good news is that I successfully added the RegisteredOwner and RegisteredOrganization values to Laptop #2's Registry (yippee!), and for laptop #3 when I applied the May Win10 Tuesday patches they did just fine and left those fields undamaged in my registry. SFC and DISM came back with no errors, so I may actually be good at this point across all 3 devices.

Thanks again to both you and Brink!

Thanks, Brink! I haven't reviewed the changes but I'm sure they will be very helpful!
