Hello @redturtle, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

You should be able to use Option 2 in the tutorial to set the name of the VPN profile as a private network.

Hi Brink and thank you for the welcome :)

I tried what you suggested but when doing this, i noticed that whenever i am connected to my VPN, the Windows network shows up as "unidentified network" instead of network 1,2,3 or whatever. So when i went into regedit and looked for networks, i found some but none called unidentified.
There was one network with the value 0 so i changed it to 1 (private) but after checking, my VPN connection still shows as public.

I am not really sure why it says unidentified network in Windows when i am connected to the VPN but it seems that this is the cause for the problem. If i could only find the VPN network in the list of networks in regedit, i think i would be able to change the value to 1.

Hmm..not sure how to proceed with this. Any ideas?

    @redturtle,

Since it's an unidentified network, you might see if using Option 3 may work to set this, but click on Unidentified Networks at step 3 and use step 6.

Hello guys, it's my first post here so I'd like to start with a big thanks for all the good work you're doing. I've used your website to grab a lot of informations concerning registry tweaks.

I'm building a custom version of Windows 10 for myself. Therefore, I want to automatically set my network to Private, so I apply this tweak during SetupComplete.cmd :
    Code:
    reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Signatures\010103000F0000F0010000000F0000F0C967A3643C3AD745950DA7859209176EF5B87C875FA20DF21951640E807D7C24" /v Category /t REG_DWORD /d "1" /f
And I also call a powershell script with this inside :
    Code:
    Get-NetConnectionProfile | Where-Object { $_.NetworkCategory -match "Public" } | Set-NetConnectionProfile -NetworkCategory Private
Thanks to that, I'm correctly connected to a private network at first logon. BUT, there is this prompt screen that I would like to get rid off :

Any idea how to do so via a reg key ?

    Hi Forum,

Is there a reg option for forcing Private for new networks on 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x networks? Now it always defaults to Public. I want that to know what process decides that and can it be steered with a registry entry? Or is it fixed for safety reasons.

    Cheers

    Hello everyone,

is there an overview somewhere with the exact differences between the two profiles "Public" and "Private"?
The settings under "Advanced sharing settings" (Network discovery, File and printer sharing...) are obvious, but are there others or to what extent do the default firewall rules differ?
For stationary devices, I usually select "Public" and then adjust the settings if necessary, however, this is not usable with mobile devices, as this would then also apply to all other and future public networks.

Behind NAT and a firewall it won't matter much anyway, but it would still be interesting to know the differences in detail.

    Thanks and greetings,
    Martin
