I haven't dug into the Public but my Network is set as Private as I don't have a need for external access to it. My Network consists of a Wireless Router, an 8-port Switch connected to it along with a NAS drive, 2 Ethernet-connected Printers, 5 Ethernet-connected Desktops and a worktable with an Ethernet cable. I also have some Wireless Notebooks connected at any time. As for the Internet I use Wireless DSL with a PoE Modem with dish-type antenna connected to the Uplink port on the Router. The cabled Desktops are 2 x Win10 Pro, Win11 Pro, Win11 Home, Win7 Pro and Linux Mint. The Notebooks vary different versions.

Assume I disabled the (built-in) Windows firewall:
Then it it doesn't matter if I assign my local computer as part of a private or public network.
A local computer without an enabled firewall behaves always as being in a private network.
    Correct?

Or are there any other differences/restrictions (beside additional firewall rules) between public and private networks?

If you have Windows Firewall disabled and don't have any other 3rd party firewall, then your computer's network is wide open for anyone to walk in.
