The blue note box at the top of the tutorial can help show you were the local cache is for the recent and current account pictures.
I saw that. However, the following isn't true for either of my computers. In both cases, this location is empty (working and not working account pic): Your current user account picture is stored in the hidden folder below. C:\Users\Public\Public Account Pictures\S-1-5-21.......(GUID for user account)

How about in the recent folder below?

    %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\AccountPictures

This won't let you change it though. It's only where you can get a copy of the image if wanted.

Yes, that folder contains my chosen pic. And it shows as a recent choice in the pick picture screen.

    Hello there !

Is there a way to change avatar with command lines ? I created an avatar, I copied it in %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\AccountPictures\ but when I launch it with cmd, it doen't work...
For instance, I type %AppData%\Microsoft\Windows\AccountPictures\c9a68c769b75c308.accountpicture-ms in a Admin cmd, but I have an error windows.

On the other hand, when I double-click on the file in Windows explorer, it works (with a confirmation windows). I want to get rid of this "manual operation".

    Thank you in advance !

I have the same error posted above when I try to change my account picture on one computer. ("Account picture error/Setting the account picture failed. Please try again.")

I have been able to change the default pictures in %ProgramData%\Microsoft\User Account Pictures to one I want, but I don't like all users having my pic.

I figured I could change just my account pic by directly editing it somewhere. However, C:\Users\Public\Public Account Pictures\S-1-5-21.......(GUID for user account) is empty. I thought I could therefore fill it with something from a computer with a working account pic, but it turns out my working computer just has a GUID, but no pic. I think this means that my actual profile pic must be stored somewhere else, not there. Any idea where? Reading this thread, I also looked at C:\Users\{your name}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\AccountPictures. That folder has my desired pic in it, but it's not used.

I tried creating an empty folder with my GUID in C:\Users\Public\Public Account Pictures\ but that didn't help either.

    Any more ideas? Thanks!
check the registry permissions for Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AccountPicture\Users\ (GUID)

mine was missing the system permissions for that key so it kept giving me "Setting the account picture failed. Please try again."

Thanks. I'm actually missing a GUID under Users in that key...

Picking a different picture also results in the same no logo.

    Hello @madmax2,

Using option 2 in the tutorial below to restore the default account picture may be able to help with this error.
