Why Doesn't This Work Anymore For Me?

Shawn, I discovered one minor tweak to using this for Segoe UI Semibold. If you leave the ttf (TrueType Font) entry alone, it makes a noticeable difference, particularly in Task Manager. I just commented the line in the .reg.

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

Hello at last! I've been gone for almost two years, limping along on a partially crashed W10 Pro installation.

Post-crash, I was unable to install W10 updates, so I had my entire desktop PC scrubbed and W10 Pro updated to its current Version 1803 [OS Build 17134.441]. I am now rebuilding my system (utilities & personalizations), but I've found that the above substitution of Segoe UI Semibold as my System Font no longer works. Brink's example of Arial Bold still woks as described; however other non-Segoe fonts, such as Trebuchet MS, do not work. Did Microsoft change anything I missed, and now I have to do something differently?

Arial Bold is a big improvement over Segoe UI, and I'm using it now. But, if anyone has a new suggestion on this topic, I'd love to test it.

    Hello @RetiredEngineer,

Using "Trebuchet MS Bold" in the .reg file below worked for me if you would like to try it.

I've found this the way to go:

1.) Export a copy of your current settings with "Advanced System Font Size Changer" (link below) . . . WindowMetrics.reg

2.) Make the following changes, below (you'll have to experiment for your preferences, but this is what I determined)

    3.) Export a copy of your updated settings . . . WindowMetrics.reg

Then, when an update puts everything back to default, just click the reg file, restart, and you're back to normal.

The first value here is the default, then, what I changed it to:

    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

    WinTools.Info - Advanced System Font Size Changer . . . Advanced System Font Changer - WinTools.Info

    Regular, 9 . . . 14 pt . . . Title Bar
    Regular, 9 . . . 12 pt . . . Menu . . . 14 and 16 cause the Excel icons to go small

    Regular, 9 . . . 10 pt . . . Message box
    ... ... ... ... ... ... ... Epson / Document Capture Pro / Simple View / Job Settings - 14 is too big for here
    ... ... ... ... ... ... ... 14, 12, 11, 10, 9 . . . 07/10/18 see screenshots, 10 pt is the optimum, for now
    ... ... ... ... ... ... ... This makes SeaMonkey Mail smaller

    ... ... ... ... ... ... ... 14 pt . . . Palette title
Regular, 9 . . . 12 pt Bold . . . Icon ... on the laptop, Icon width changed so there can be two rows
... ... ... ... ... ... ... 14 makes it so the lower part of "g" is cut off in File Explorer file names
    ... ... ... ... ... ... ... Might as well make it bold then, to compensate
    ... ... ... ... ... ... ... 14 pt . . . Tooltip

    Icons - Horizontal and Vertical
    The default is 75 x 75 . . . no, 86 x 86 ?
You can't get an icon down to the bottom edge of the screen, though, without putting that at 40,
. . . but then, it overlaps on other icons
The max is 180 x 180 . . . Then, the icon can't get to the bottom of the screen.
This appears to be a hidden square or rectangle, under the icon.
135 x 70 seems good . . . No more than two rows of text underneath, so then it doesn't hide it.

That's a good way. I export the Metrics, Fonts, and Font Substitutes. I'm also doing Insider, several builds, and saves a lot of time with a new build.

This program solves another common issue:

DesktopOK . . . Save and restore the desktop icon positions . . . DesktopOK 5.81 Save and restore the desktop icon positions.

    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

    And this one:

Dexpot | Virtual desktops for Windows . . . Dexpot | Virtuelle Desktops für Windows

. . . but, I noticed a minor issue with Dexpot, that remains unsolved (as far as I know):

File Explorer / Highlight 3 text files to open at once / Press Enter, Computer Seizes | Notepad++ Community . . . 06/05/18 I narrowed it down. I'm running the latest version of Dexpot, 1.6.14.2439 . . . The settings I changed, and my notes, are below. Here's what happens: If NPP is open with one text file showing, you can go to File Explorer, and open 2, 3, 4 more, all at the same time, probably even more. If NPP is closed, however . . . You can open 1 or 2 at the same time . . . but if you try to open 3 or more at the same time, the computer has a seizure. There are a lot of settings in Dexpot. Could there be a setting that addresses this? . . . File Explorer Press Enter, Computer Seizes | Notepad++ Community

Referral to great website for visually impaired; but first use Shawn's Restore_default_font_in_Windows_10.reg, or unpredictable results may occur.

I just used it (ASFC) to make a backup for the original settings . . . I've been using it at least a couple of years, and have not had any problems . . . I'm on Win 10 . . . 1803 (OS Build 17134.472)

    For the visually impaired? LOL . . . no . . . it's great for a 27" monitor!

I also use this, helps a lot sometimes:
Control Panel / Mouse / Pointer Options / Show location of pointer when I press the CTRL key

Found A Problem With Shawn's Change System Font Tutorial

I run Microsoft Windows 10 Pro - Version 10.0.17134, Build 17134. After using Shawn's tutorial registry change to Arial Bold for my failing eyesight, I noticed I lost MS Snipping Tool. When launched, what I get on screen is …

Change Default System Font in Windows 10-lost-snipping-tool.png

There are replacements for this app, so I'm not much concerned here. However, has anyone noticed any other bugs like in W10v0.17134 when the System Font is changed? Now that I've read MS has required Segoe UI to be its only allowed W10 System Font, I'm curious about further repercussions.

    Snipping Tool

Here's what my Snipping Tool looks like at these font sizes with ASFC

I'd say to run ASFC, see what your font sizes are set at, compare to mine, adjust appropriately.

    Win Version 1803
    OS Build 17134.556

So two points to please clarify for me before I charge ahead with a minor System Restore. 1) Did you not perform a system font change to Arial Bold before you used AFSC? 2) I noticed you used AFSC v1.1.2.33. I was just able to download AFSC v1.1.3.34, which I presume will work just as well, even though it's been changed a bit. Am I correct?
