How to Backup and Restore Taskbar Toolbars in Windows 10

Windows includes a special application desktop toolbar called the taskbar that shows on the bottom of a display screen by default. The taskbar allows you to find, see, open, and switch between your apps. You can also see the date and time, system icons, and items running in the background on the notification area. You can make the taskbar look how you want, manage your calendar, pin your favorite apps to it, change the size, change location on screen, and specify how taskbar buttons group together when you have more than one window open.

You can also add toolbars to the taskbar. The default toolbars include Address, Links, Desktop, and any new toolbars (custom) added by the user or an application.

If you have more than one extended display connected to your PC, then toolbars will only show on the taskbar on your main display by default.

This tutorial will show you how to back up and restore all of your taskbar toolbars in Windows 10.

    Contents

    OPTION ONE

To Back Up all Taskbar Toolbars

The taskbar toolbars you add for your account are saved in the registry key location below.

The downloadable .bat file below will export this Desktop key from the registry location below to a My_Taskbar-Toolbars_Backup.reg file on your desktop as a backup.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams\Desktop

1 Click/tap on the Download button below to download the .bat file below.

    Backup_Taskbar_Toolbars.bat

    Download

2 Save the .bat file to your desktop.

    3 Unblock the .bat file.

    4 Run the .bat file.

5 You will now notice a command prompt quickly open and close.

6 You will now have a My_Taskbar-Toolbars_Backup.reg file on your desktop. This is the back up of all your current taskbar toolbars. Keep it saved in a safe location.

    OPTION TWO

    To Restore Taskbar Toolbars

You can restore a backup of taskbar toolbars to any user account or computer.

1 Click/tap on the My_Taskbar-Toolbars_Backup.reg file created from Option One above.

2 When prompted, click on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

    3 Restart explorer to apply.

    That's it,
    Shawn

    Hello Necro,

Normally if all the computers have the same shortcuts available in the toolbar, it should work.

Just to verify, did you restart the explorer process or sign out/in afterwards?

Are all the computers running the same version of Windows 10?

If not, then it's possible something may be different between a version causing an issue.

    Hi Shawn, and all,
I love my Toolbars and have several, but I have a problem in that sometimes after a reboot (Win10 2004) all my Toolbars disappear, and I have to tediously reinstall all them (I have tried a couple of macro recorders, but these seem to fail). So Brink, a backup of my Toolbars would be wonderful but when I go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams\Desktop
that registry position is empty. I done what little I know of to search the registry, and I've searched %appdata%, but I can't find where my user-created Toolbars are saved.
To create my Toolbars I use no special app, I just right click on the Taskbar, etc.
Can you suggest a way forward for me?
    Take care everyone,
    Doug

    Hello Doug,

I'm afraid this registry key is just the location where the toolbars and their settings are referenced in the TaskbarWinXP binary value. It allows you to back up and restore these settings so you don't have to manually add your toolbars again.

This doesn't include the actual folders you used for toolbars.

    Hello Shawn,
Your dedication to your followers is something other forum owner could learn from you. I don't know how you cope with it all. But a VERY big thank you.
A short recap. My problem is having to create my beloved Toolbars, because from time to time they disappear.
So, a slightly different question. When I create a toolbar, where in Windows is this action saved? If I can find this it may give me leads to why they sometimes disappear. Do you know where? Or is my question naive? I have tried to monitor changes to C:\users, without success.

Take care and stay safe in this troubled world,
    Doug

    Hello Doug,

Thank you for the kind words. I always enjoy helping if able.

When you create/add a toolbar, it is stored in the registry to the TaskbarWinXP binary value in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams\Desktop key.

Do you have anything installed that may be clearing these toolbars by deleting the TaskbarWinXP binary value or Desktop key above?
