Add Toolbars to Taskbar in Windows 10

You could drag and drop the main taskbar on the main display to the secondary display to swap it on the displays without changing the main display.

I'm not sure it's possible via PowerShell, but if it helps, you are able to backup and restore toolbars. This can be done on any Windows 10 computer or account.

Backup and Restore Taskbar Toolbars in Windows 10

My taskbar space is always at a premium, so short toolbar names are desirable. I like to give each toolbar a single-character name, using a symbol character which helps indicate its purpose. For example, here are four toolbars:

NTFS filenames use Unicode characters. Most Unicode characters, including symbols, are acceptable in Windows 10 folder names. The toolbars above resulted from creating the following folders (purpose noted in blue) and adding them as custom toolbars:



I paste symbol characters into folder names after copying them from the Character Map utility. In Advanced view you can search for keywords such as "arrow" or "angle". Alternatively, grouping by Unicode Subrange offers several groups which show non-alphanumeric characters by type.

There is an issue with locking the taskbar to hide the move/resize handles (as of Windows 10 version 1903). If a toolbar with a short name has been moved or resized in the taskbar, then locking the taskbar leaves its width unchanged, exposing its first icon. Resizing a toolbar moves or resizes the toolbar to its left, so the problem cascades.

The only workarounds I have found are:

1. Leave the taskbar unlocked.🙁
2. Remove the toolbars and add them again in order (left to right).😒 Lock the taskbar immediately if it is not already locked.

If workaround 2 becomes a bother, you could look into backing up and restoring your toolbars. I have not tried it.

1 What, for the purposes of comparison, is the width like if you rename one of the toolbars 'Menus'. I ask because when I was experimenting I found that the toolbar would not get any narrower so I might as well use that as the folder name.

2 There is no issue with icons being exposed. You can always avoid that. See steps 5, 6, 7 in my post #20 of this tutorial thread.

Here is the width comparison you suggested. Using words for all four menu names would take the space of several toolbar icons.

Thank you for pointing out steps 5, 6, and 7 — I had read them too fast and missed a couple of details. Sorry to say, they don't seem to help for these single-character toolbar names.

1. When I squeeze the toolbar in step 6, it shows just the first icon and '»'.
2. When I do Show Title in step 7, the toolbar shows the title '♪', half of the first icon, and '»'. At this point I can squeeze the toolbar further to show just the title.
3. Whether I do that or not, Lock the taskbar causes the toolbar to widen enough to show half or all of the first icon in addition to the title.

I have this problem only with very short toolbar titles. It doesn't happen if the title is longer than a few characters.

I linked to #20 You can drag Taskbar Toolbars to the left because I could find not a tutorial which describes the details of toolbar handles for moving/resizing, and I found that post has a number of helpful suggestions. I see that it is dated two years ago — is it possible that Windows Updates have changed toolbar sizing behavior since then?
