    Del /F /Q %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\AutomaticDestinations\*
    Del /F /Q %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent\CustomDestinations\*
    REG Delete HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU /VA /F
    REG Delete HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TypedPaths /VA /F

    1 Click/tap on the Download button below to download the .bat file below.

    Clear_File_Explorer_History.bat

    Download

    2. Save the .bat file to your desktop.

    3 Unblock the .bat file.

    4 Double click/tap on the .bat file to run it.

    That's it,
    Shawn

    Thanks for that explanation Shawn. Just wanted to clarify a couple of things:

    #1 - both methods (.bat file method & clear history in explorer method) accomplish exactly the same things, and one only needs to use one or the other method depending on personal preference;

    #2 - both methods cover all of the items at the beginning of this article, namely:
    a:) quick access - unpinned frequent, and MRU;
    b:) jump list;
    c:) address bar histories

    Thanks for your help and explanation! much appreciated!

    David

    PS. what about MRU's and frequent history in MS office programs such as MS work or Excel. Does this cover them as well, or are those histories under a different section of the registry?

    Hello David, :)

    That's correct. Both options perform the same action and affect the same thing. I like to try and provide different ways to do the same thing to help folks do it the way that's easiest for them.

    I believe the one's for Office will be different. The tutorial is basically just for explorer items.

    OK thanks for the quick response!

    Sorry to raise this thread from the dead, but the solution is not working completely for me. I used the batch file option and it cleared the executables from the run list (regedit, cmd, notepad, etc.), but not the file locations. When I type a drive letter it auto completes for a file on a thumb drive. Please see below. I have searched the registry forward and backwards and I cannot find this item anywhere.

    Hello Tim,

    Does option 1 completely clear it for you instead?

    If wanted, you could disable AutoSuggest to not see anything.
