How to Add or Remove Submit Button in Search Box in Windows 10

Searching from your taskbar makes it easier for you to search the web and Windows.

Starting with Windows 10 build 14946, you can add or remove a submit button to the right of the search box.

If added, you will not see the submit button on the right side of the search box until you start typing into the search box.

This tutorial will how you how to add or remove a submit button to the right of the search box for your account in Windows 10.

EXAMPLE: Submit button added to search box

    Here's How:

The downloadable .bat files below will modify the DWORD value in the registry keys below.

    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search\Flighting\0\ShowSubmitButtonRightOfSearchBox

    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Search\Flighting\1\ShowSubmitButtonRightOfSearchBox

    Value DWORD

    0 = Remove
    1 = Add

1 Do step 2 (add) or step 3 (remove) below for what you would like to do.

2 Add Submit Button to Right of Search Box

    A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the BAT file below, and go to step 4 below.

    Add_Submit_Button_Right_Of_Search_Box.bat

    Download

3 Remove Submit Button from Right of Search Box

    This is the default setting.

    A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the BAT file below, and go to step 4 below.

    Remove_Submit_Button_Right_Of_Search_Box.bat

    Download

4 Save the .bat file to your desktop.

    5 Unblock the .bat file.

    6 Run the .bat file.

7 You will now notice your screen flicker and a command prompt quickly open and close as explorer is restarted to apply the registry changes.

8 When finished, you can delete the downloaded .bat file if you like.

    That's it,
    Shawn

Does this tutorial apply in v1909 ? It looks like, from the pictures above, the submit button is for the old cortana search, not the new immersive search box. I tried executing the bat file (after unblocking and running as admin) and no submit button was added, after explorer or windows restart. I tried manually adding the ShowSubmitButtonRightOfSearchBox sub-keys to the 0 and 1 keys described above, but the value d-word in the 0 folder disappears after closing and opening regedit again. Can you please confirm?

    Hello @bamajon1974,

Yes, this will still work in v1909 and v2004 Windows 10.

I've updated the screenshots in the tutorial for the newer search UI.

Your other posts about search were for tutorials that are no longer valid or work anymore in Windows 10.

Brink, I tried on another computer and could get the submit arrow to show up. The laptop I had trouble with getting the submit button to show up had nothing in the Fligting reg. keys. Is that because I disabled Cortana?

Anyway, how does this bat file work? What is the difference between the 0 and 1 keys in Flighting? Does the bat file add ShowSubmitButtonRightOfSearchBox to both 0 and 1 folders? Does it change the Value dword to 0 or 1 in both? I manually changed the reg entries on my desktop rather than ran the bat file. The submit button shows up sporadically but not regularly. Before and after text is entered into the box. Do you know why?

The keys and DWORD values should already be there. The .bat files just change the DWORD value to 0 or 1 to add/remove.

What build and version of Windows 10 are you running for the one this doesn't work for?

Just to note, the submit button will not show in the search box until after you start typing in the search box.

v1909 for both computers. On the desktop where the hack works, I just ran the bat file above after blocking and running as admin. The search glyph does show up before typing anything in the search box once after a sign-off/restart, but disappears after subsequent and repeated clicking of the search magnifying glass icon in the taskbar. When I enter text into the search box, after a handfull of times, the search glyph appears but eventually disappears too. This effect seems to be random.

Is the search box empty when the submit button disappears?

Yes. The submit button appears even if the search box is empty right after the tweak is applied. However, the submit button disappears when the search box is empty after a couple of additional searches. Over a period of a few minutes, the submit button disappears even with text in the search box.

    Does that help?

Hmm, I'm not sure why it would be disappearing and reappearing randomly like that for you.
