How to Add or Remove Power Menu Icon on Sign-in Screen in Windows 10

The Power menu on the sign-in screen can allow users to sleep, hibernate, shut down, or restart the PC without having to sign in to Windows.

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove the Power menu icon on the sign-in screen for all users in Windows 10.

You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to add or remove the Power menu icon from the sign-in screen.

To Add or Remove Power Menu Icon on Sign-in Screen using Local Security Policy

Note   Note
Local Security Policy is only available in the Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions.

All editions can use Option Two below.


1. Open Local Security Policy (secpol.msc).

2. Expand open Local Policies in the left pane, and click/tap on Security Options. (see screenshot below)

3. In the right pane of Security Options, double click/tap on the Shutdown: Allow system to be shut down without having to log on policy to open its properties. (see screenshot above)

4. Select (dot) Enabled (add - default) or Disabled (remove) for what you want, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

5. When finished, you can close the Local Security Policy window if you like.

To Add or Remove Power Menu Icon on Sign-in Screen using a REG file

The .reg files below will add and modify the DWORD value in the registry key below.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

shutdownwithoutlogon DWORD

0 = Remove
1 = Add


1. Do step 2 (add) or step 3 (remove) below for what you would like to do.


 2. To Add Power Menu Icon to Sign-in Screen

NOTE: This is the default setting.

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

 3. To Remove Power Menu Icon from Sign-in Screen

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 4 below.

4. Save the .reg file to your desktop.

5. Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

6. If prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

7. If you like, you can now delete the downloaded .reg file.
