Hello John, and welcome to Ten Forums.
Double check to see what your max storage size is set for the drive for restore points to see if it may need to be increased to allow more restore points to be kept.
Change System Protection Max Storage Size for Drive in Windows 10 | Tutorials
Thanks for suggestion but already have allocated storage at 3% (about 2GB - probably too much but have plenty of capacity). Yesterday I run the task on demand at regular intervals and all restore points created and available. This morning all restore points have gone! I did note that there was an update to Win10 late yesterday and I have read somewhere that certain updates can delete all restore points. Do you know if this is correct? If so can it be overcome as seem odd that Win10 would do an update and if anything goes wrong the only solution is a complete reinstall of Windows!
Correct. It's not uncommon for some updates (ex: new builds) to wipe previous restore points.
There's something a bit unpredictable--or fluky- with system restore in Windows 10.
I got that same Windows Update on Tuesdsay and it did not delete my restore points. Neither did it create a RP prior to the update, as it should have
My restore points do get deleted even though I have it set to 20% of the space!
Seems to happen with RPs older than 14 days, or after ~18 RP's and when I'm very much below the max space allowed. EventViewer shows no "volsnap" episodes for those deletions. Nor can I find other entries for this. Fortunately, I cant remember using SR to go back further than that. Nonetheless it does seem show that Windows is deleting RPs well before max space or 90 days is reached
Hi Shawn,
Love your tutorials. the automatic restore point on schedule seems to be working, but the shortcut to create a restore point with notices to name it and for success doesn't work. I set this up twice, in an Administrator's account, with UAC set to the default setting, and unblocked the zip file before extracting the program file as well as the shortcut. When I run your manual restore point creation shortcut, I got a "success" notification, but I cannot find it in the System Restore list of Restore Points (see screenshot). Please advise.

Hello Ken,
Do you mean the shortcut from step 5 in the tutorial below?
Create System Restore Point shortcut in Windows 10
If so, restore points created by it will have an "Install" type.
I just tested it on my system to see if something may have changed, but it's still working for me. As a test, manually run the .vbs file for it instead of the shortcut to see how it runs for you. This way we may be able to rule out a possible issue with the shortcut or location issue.
When the shortcut activates the .vbs file code, a UAC elevation request prompt opens, and after entering the administrative password, a window pops up asking the user to "Enter a restore point description". I left it as "Manual Restore Point", but, as you can see, there is no such description listed, despite my doing it twice before the first post, and once again just now. Each time I got the successful execution message. But there is no "Manual Restore Point" listed. You will see, however, that the once daily, 6:00 A.M. "Automatic Restore Point" has been flawless. Please see the screenshots below.
Something else occurred to me. Are you using 32-bit or 64-bit versions of Windows? Since I am using 64-bit, if the .vbs file uses a 32-bit code (I haven't had the chance to check), is it possible that the file should be in "Program Files (x86)" instead of "Program Files"?

Just copied the .vbs file to "Program Files (x86) and edited the shortcut accordingly. Still received the description entry and success messages, but no restore point was listed in System Restore. I've changed it back. Didn't think it would work, as Windows 10 64-bit automatically runs apps in 32-bit mode, as with IE, when needed. Oh well.
@Kengrush,
It doesn't matter if it's 32-bit or 64-bit. The shortcut works on both equally. I had "Program Files" used in the tutorial to copy the contents for the shortcut to since both have it. That is where the shortcut is looking for the .vbs at.
As a test, run the .vbs from within an administrator account to see if it works for you then.
A question if I may, Its possible to setup restore points on ANY hard drive, how does this procedure know its creating a restor point for the Boot drive ( C) ? thanks
