It may be wise to mention here that the Powershell cmdlet is only available (as far as I know) with Hyper-V installed in Windows 10 — through the Windows 10 Features in Programs & Features. I had a bit of frustration just now trying to use this cmdlet on a new rig after using it on my old one — and couldn't get it to work. After a bit of Googling, I needed to enable Hyper-V, which did the trick. But I don't think it's enabled by default in Windows 10. Thanks for all the great tut's, Brink!

Hello LordJair, and welcome to Ten Forums.

Thank you for the heads up. I added a note to the PowerShell options to help make sure this is clear.

We also can use DISKPART scripting instruction under CMD (Command Prompt) without PowerShell.

I would like to create a .vhd or .vhdx file from a bootable Windows XP installtion disk. How do you create a .vhd or .vhdx file?

The easiest method would be to create new generation 1 (BIOS / MBR) virtual machine in Hyper-V, and install XP on it.

I think that's what I'm trying to do but every time I start the VM it needs the CD in the drive - hence my interest in the .vhdx file to load XP. Any tips for fast startup up so the VM loads from files only on my hard drive?

    Hello William,

Usually a VHD file gets mounted as a virtual drive when clicked on. Could have happened by mistake??
