MRCBT helps speed up backups for a Differential or Incremental by recording in advance which blocks have changed and will need backing up. Without it Macrium has to compare the index of the full backup to the whole of the partition's MFT to determine what has changed.

It makes no difference to the number of blocks restored, only Rapid Delta Restore can do that.

Back on Black Friday they had a 50% discount running. Maybe we see a similar sale at Christmas.

They have a 20% off via a link on the Free version program window right now. I found out about the 50% for BF after the fact. Kind of pissed me off they never emailed customers. Maybe it was also on the program screen but since I have backups automated for in the middle of the night and have never needed to restore (knock on wood), I won't notice offers on the program running screen. I only noticed this one because I opened the program to add a new backup schedule. Grrr.

For testing I intend to:

1. Mount the drive I do backups to.
2. Take a Reflect Incremental or Differential backup for other drives attached to the system.
3. Dismount the drive backups are on.
4. Run tests.
5. Shut down the system.
6. Boot Reflect Recovery from a thumb drive.
7. Mount the backup drive.
8. Do an RDR for the drives backed up in step 2.
9. Reboot the restored system with all drives exactly like they were at the start of this process.

Step 7 should be done before step 6 to ensure the backup drive is recognised and loaded into MR. You can probably plug and play but I've not tried it.

By the way. Paid versions of MR have ransomware protection which prevents unauthorised access to MR images on attached or networked volumes.

You point to the latest Incremental or Differential to restore, not the base full, unless that is what you really want. During the RDR, it will restore the base full, then automatically apply the incremental/differential. Always point to the backup file (incr/diff) where you want to end up, and MR will do the rest.

That's that I was hoping. But lazy programmers might make a customer go thru the chain manually. Good to know.

so ask you which is your second reliable and easy (few clicks ) software for a VERY newbie?
I will only use one of them for an image backup (in middle of january 2020)
to my "Windows 7 Home Premium (64 btits)" for "Windows Home" (next build on May,2020 )

HumbertoH, go with Macrium Reflect. It's the best backup program around. The free version is all you really need.
