I know there is no MR on it - any programs can be easily added.

The screen res is the issue. Looks like there is indeed something about your machine that is causing the problem.

What is the mobo - is it the one listed in your specs?
Interesting as my specs seems a lot different ....viewing them...think either John changed something...or it got messed up some other way...But anyhow...

Yes my motherboard on THIS rig is the Asus Apex XI ....made for overclocking.
My 2nd new build I am making now, will have the Asus Apex X motherboard....That board has no resolutions issues when booting into MR from a usb....

Thanks for all your patience and time today SIW2 .....I might try again later.
The issue IS my motherboard, as it always defaults to the higher resolution when booting from a usb drive. Been trying to fix this issue for a while now.

It seems that is the answer. Something about the Apex XI mobo.

Yes....but I was hoping their was a way to give me at least choices when I boot up from a usb drive, so far there are no choices.
so when I booted up and was on the 2560 x 1440 ....I could then choose a lower res ....but so far nothing works booting from a usb drive ....

Weird, must be annoying. I haven't found anything relevant on tinternet. Bios Version 1302 is most recent on the site - don't know if you already have that, or if it would make any difference. Bios descriptions they give are often very vague.

I'm looking for two things (1) backup software and (2) ways to safely test things and roll back to previous state.

I'm wondering if Macrium Reflect might be good for both. I'm fairly certain it would be great for the backups.

But my system drive is an SSD so I do NOT want to do full restores after testing and eat up so much of the SSD lifespan (not to mention the time reading a full from the backup which is on a HD).

So, specifically I want to know if Rapid Delta Restore could (1) restore my C: drive to its exact state prior to the testing and (2) only write the very small amount that had been changed. Would doing the RDR from Macrium recovery rather than the running system provide any additional defense for malware? All the backups would be on a removable drive that will not be attached during the testing. So, I'm thinking I may have answered my own question. If I do the RDR from the running system I would have to attach the removable drive with the backups and expose it to any malware the testing resulted in. So, RDR after booting Macrium recovery and make that from a USB flash drive.

Also, I want to confirm the RDR can be pointed to a differential or incremental save and it will use the base and the differential or (all incrementals) so I don't have to do an RDR from the base first and then from the differential or incrementals.

Some of my confusion is that Macrium only mentions Rapid Delta in the contexts of Restore and Clone but not Backup. I don't want to find out after purchase that I have to use a clone of my drive(s) as input for Rapid Delta Restore as opposed to my latest backup of the drive(s).

I'm also wondering could any changes (including malware) survive the restore?

I'm hoping to avoid doing the testing in a virtual machine do to the overhead and complication to the base system and the limitations of virtual machines.

How fast RDR is and how much data is written depends on how much has changed on the disk, so frequent backups are desirable. I back up full weekly and differential daily and an RDR restore takes only a few minutes. Although I've never had a restore fail there is always some risk that it might so you need to take that into your considerations.

Thanks. Can you confirm you only have to initiate ONE RDR when there are incremental or differential backups since the last full? I would not want to do one from the full and then another RDR from the latest differentials or RDRs for all incrementals since the last full.
