If the drive attached is not the one intended, it will proceed with the backup. That may not be desirable, and not realized until after the fact. Based on the retention defined, an image may be lost that was not intended.

If you have an image file named 4444.mrimg and want to "duplicate" it, you would not use Macrium. You'd just copy it to another folder as if it were a photograph.

Correct. What I described is a typical scenario of doing Daily/Weekly/Monthly backups. What Iggy described is making a duplicate of an existing backup. Two different things.

That and running verify image while you're making it.
As for the rescue disk:
I let Macrium make an ISO file which I then use to create a USB stick (easy when your machine is fully EFI compliant).
Furthermore I also create a 1 Gib partition on the external HD to which the RE files are copied after formatting it to FAT32.
Make sure both do actually boot if not they're useless.
The usb stick is just to be safe, most of the time I use the external USB HDD to launch MR for a restore to disk.

I'm OK with installing a bootmenu on the machine when all else fails or whatever. It will increase boot time though.

Oh, USB actually have lower MTBF (Mean Time Between Failure) not higher BTW.

Reading this discussion now, I realized there's one tutorial missing, about an option not available in Macrium: how to create a physical Macrium Rescue Partition.

One more idea to add to the confusion.

I don't create a Macrium Rescue flash drive. I use Kyhi's Rescue ISO which I used to create a bootable flash drive from. It has Macrium Reflect on it and is perfectly capable of creating manual backups if needed and restoring backups as needed.

The bonus is there are a lot of additional tools on it that can help resolve PC problems.
