These two created a new bigger E: and then the AOMEI PE Partition. I was just about to delete my post when I saw your reply. My main concern was the boot media I made with MR. It only takes a few minutes to make new ones, and I was planning on letting the rest go until my next weekly backup. After a little more research, I think that AOMEI's PE was just a temporary thing it created.

Differential Backups are always relative to full backup i.e. contain changes since last full backup.

Incremental backups contain changes since last incremental backup.

You can daisy chain incremental backups.

Differential backups are not daisy chained.

Yeah you can mix and match and create complicated chains with branches but no idea why you would actually want to do that :-D.

I guess my brain would just not keep track of anything that complicated.

There's no confusion here.

If your plan is let's say a monthly full, weekly differential, and daily incremental, an incremental would for instance be created day after the full, if that day would not be scheduled for weekly differential. If it would be scheduled for weekly differential, incremental would not be created, but it would be created day after that, based on the differential day before.

Differential is always based on last full, and incremental on whatever last backup, be it full, differential or incremental.

I do only manual, weekly, full backups or an extra one if situation warrants it (new build or a lot of experimenting). As I keep on system disk as little as possible so backups are fast and 70 -80GB so I can afford to keep last one as well as 2 -3 before that. There's another SSD with only some games installed on it but that gets separate backup once in a blue moon. Other 2 HDDs for data are too large an too spread out for effective backup like this so I just copy some folders to external disks manually when needed.
