Windows 10: Add or Remove Folders from This PC in Windows 10
Yeah it's literally one of my only issues with Win10 besides needing to update in order to use certain WinStore games and apps. Can't really complain. Thanks for the help Night Hawk and Brink!

Well besides having all of the clutter in the main explorer window and on the navigation the one thing you could say could prove to be a real time saver would be those folders found in the Quick Access. You could say that had been named accordingly to get at folders otherwise buried under the user accounts or the need to go on a "Search and Hope to find" hunt for each one in the Program Files, Program Files(x86) directories rather then the need to see a shortcut pasted on the desktop.
Now here's an interesting point for dealing with the addition or removal of folders you would have linked there where the other guide might be something to look over rather then blindly trying to tinker in the registry. Quick access - Add or Remove Frequent folders Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums
I have a suspicion that would be a bit closer to what you are looking for along with the removal of unnecessary folder clutter otherwise seen by default in File Explorer.
What a fantastic site this is. Much respect to you @Brink for your dedication to provide not only a valuable archive of information, but personal responses to individual users.
I am the sysadmin of a primary school and I'm currently tweaking Windows 10 in a virtual test environment in order to deploy it site wide. I applied the registry fixes via group policy and they work perfectly, removing the local user folders from File Explorer as expected.
However, when I redirect user folders to a network location (as we do in our real environment), the user folders reappear as the GUIDs no longer relate to these folders. Is there any way I can hide these redirected user folders?
Thanks in anticipation for your advice.
This doesn't seem to be an issue anymore in build 14965.
Hello @StevieM, and welcome to Ten Forums.
What method did you use to redirect the user folders to a network location?
I'll see if I may be able to use the same method to test with, and see what I may be able to come up with.
In Active Directory, on the Profile tab of each domain user's properties, home folder connects drive letter U to \\[server]\[share]\%username%.
The 'User Configuration/Policies/Windows Settings/Folder Redirection' Group Policy settings on the domain controller are set like this:
- Documents - Redirect to the user's home directory
- Pictures / Music / Videos - Follow the Documents folder
- Desktop / Start Menu - Redirect to the following location: \\[server]\[share]\%location% (where %location% is a declared Environment variable in a GPO relating to the computer)
- The remaining folders are not configured.
Thanks for your time.
I'm afraid that I have no idea for that method.
Hello StevieM Another Welcome to TenF! I think you might have to outline some of the basics you used for the redirection from local drive to server domain there. The GP and registry tweaks here to eliminate folders are primarily for the home desktop deployment whereas you are working in group server networked type situation at the school there.
Nevermind! It was worth asking.
I realise that this site isn't targeted at domain networks, but I have found plenty of useful tutorials that fit my needs perfectly and for which I am very grateful.
And thanks for the welcome, guys.
Thanks Brink! Guess it's finally time to update. I've heard the Anniversary Update installs like fresh install and not an update. Is that true? Will I have to reinstall my programs?
