How to Type Special Characters with ALT Keyboard Sequences

    information   Information
Many special characters are available that may not appear on your keyboard. This tutorial will show you how to type special characters using a list of ALT keyboard sequences.

Did you ever want to, or need to, enter a special character that is not on your keyboard? Like 72° instead of 72 degrees?

Or £9.99 instead of 9.99 British Pounds? And our EU friends, €19.95 instead of 19.95 Euros? Many more:

    ╛ Å ¾ Ø --- the list goes on.

This is not a registry hack or system tweak of any kind. It simply uses the built-in character set and the ALT key. This applies only to keyboards with a separate numeric keypad on the right. Simply press and hold the ALT key and enter the numeric code on the keypad. When you let go of the ALT key, the symbol appears.

    Examples: ù = ALT+0249 -- ° = ALT+248 -- £ = ALT+156

I find it easier to just press the key with 1 on it, instead of Alt+(numpad)49

Thanks for posting the information and the portable doc.

Every Windows has Charmap in Start | Windows Accessories. It's great if you need a one time character, but not as convenient as learning the few often typed characters such as the ones Dick mentioned.

If you want to go further with characters, beyond this thread then you should take a peek at Charmap

I don't even know how its made of how it works.
