Brick. Sorry to keep bugging you about this. I re-set it again to 1680x1050 at 100% DPI and I have the task bar back. I can live with it this way for now. I do notice that most of the discussions on this issue involve making the display larger than 100%. In my case, I would like it smaller without losing the task bar. Thanks again. skh.

Do you have the latest graphics driver installed?

If not, this could be a reason why the default (recommended) screen resolution is not displaying properly for you.

Displaying my ignorance here, I'm not sure what a graphic driver is or how to update it. My computer is brand new. The monitor is 2 years old.

In that case, please go ahead and create a new thread for this issue for us to continue there so we don't go off topic anymore from this tutorial. :)

    Hello ,
    new here (not to computing)
    .
    I did Option Three :
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop LogPixels
    and set it to my monitor's DPI of 94 ;
    logoutlogin .
However , I double checked the inch ruler via
Cntrl Pnl > Display > Advanced sizing of text and other items
_ set a custom scaling level (not recommended)
    ..
    -- Before and after and do not see any difference ;
it still reads long . --
Even did regedit 'As Administrator' _ no change_
I remember that in W7 it would change , and get almost exact .
    ...
Is there a work around ?
    ...
    thanks in advance

Hello positiveX, and welcome to Ten Forums. :)

Just to verify, did you sign out and in or restart the computer afterwards to apply?

Looks like a change was made. I have updated OPTION THREE to add steps 6 and 7 that will allow it to work again. :)

Trying to set W10 to monitor physical (94) DPI

    .
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
    Win8DpiScaling REG_DWORD 0x00000001 (1)
    .
However , the 'double check' of the inch ruler mentioned above still shows no change .
    ..
    ? ideas ?
There are a couple of other registry entries in this general area that might need to be set .
    ..
    present setting :
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics
    DpiScalingVer REG_DWORD 0x00001000 (4096)
Change DPI Scaling Level for Displays in Windows 10-w10-regedit-dpi_win8dpiscaling-1-dpiscalingver-4096-20161003.png
    or
    present setting
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics
    AppliedDPI REG_DWORD 0x00000060 (96)
Change DPI Scaling Level for Displays in Windows 10-w10-regedit-logpixels-94-_applieddpi-96-20161003_0.png
    finally , maybe
    present setting (not set)
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\PerMonitorSettings\<ID>
    DpiValue 0x00000000 (0)
Change DPI Scaling Level for Displays in Windows 10-w10-regedit-permonitorsettings_dpivalue-0-20161003_0.png
    ...
This technet info may imply that trying to set Windows 10 to my monitor's
physical DPI of 94 is not do-able : 'DPI-related APIs and registry settings Updated: October 20, 2013 Applies To: Windows 8.1' https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn528846.aspx#system
    System-wide scale factor

When the Let me choose one scaling level for all my displays checkbox is checked, the user can specify a scale factor that applies to all displays, regardless of each display’s pixel density. By using the custom setting, the user can select values other than 100%, 125%, 150%, 200%, although they are limited to the range (100%-500%). This setting is configured in the HKCU\ControlPanel\Desktop\LogPixels registry key.

    Table 6 HKCU\ControlPanel\Desktop\LogPixels Values
    Key value Meaning
96 100% scaling on every display
120 125% scaling on every display
144 150% scaling on every display
192 200% scaling on every display
<other> <other>*100/96 scaling on every display
    ...
    ? "Limited to range 100% -"
which begins at physical DPI of 96 (according to the chart) .
    ?
FYI : regedit verification of 'AppliedDpiScaling' keeps 're-setting' to (96) [binary] .
    ?
So , does this mean that we cannot set our Windows 10 'below' 96 DPI ?
If so , maybe some more involved with M$ could raise this issue .
    ...
    Again , thanks in advance

As a test, use OPTION FOUR to reset DPI, and try again to see if that may help.
