Looking at your video closer, it appears that your Windows Security app is broken since none of the setting pages in it will open.

You might consider doing a repair install to fix it without losing anything.

That really sucks... I just got it fixed and had to reset 2 times, I shouldn’t have used it cause before, it was all fine.

Turning it off using the .reg file in this tutorial wouldn't have caused that. You have something else going on.

With Windows Defender turned off completely, that means that all of its features are turned off too, correct?

    Hello TON,

The antivirus part will be disabled.

Anyone feel free to check me on this, but both methods seem to be invalidated with 1903.

I tested with the MSDN 1903 (Enterprise) release, updated to 18362.53 via the public CU available for it.

GPO method: Has no effect (tested with reboot)
Registry method: Has no effect because the Registry items vanishes upon reboot

Bottom line: Defender remains in action

Doing this seems to actually work, though I don't know if it's a 1:1 equivalent of what we had before. I also don't know if the above is a bug or a feature.

    Hello @rseiler,

I just tested on my Windows 10 version 1903, and can confirm this tutorial no longer works in it.

I have posted a warning at the top of the tutorial for this with an alternative tutorial that can be used instead to help.

Thanks. I'm not so sure about the real-time protection policy alone though, since its description reads to me like it's entirely about disabling real-time protection prompts/alerts only, not the actual real-time protection. This is why I was exploring some of the complementary policies shown in my last post.

In the auto-protection thread, you said this, so maybe I'm wrong: "will let you disable Windows Defender Real-time Protection without being prompted it is turned off, and without it getting automatically turned back on later by Windows."

Yeah, it's not 100% like this one was, but just something for now.

If you have a 3rd party AV installed, Windows Defender will often be disabled by default.
