Can a thumb drive be used as a index file location?
I'm afraid not. It needs to be an internal fixed drive.

    You could try.
It worked. As soon as the re-rebuild began, the encrypted partition appeared on the list of indexed locations.

    Thanks again!

Is the original index file still on my OS partition? Can I delete it?

    Great news.

Normally, any old index locations would get deleted, but you can check and delete it if so.

    Default:
    %ProgramData%\Microsoft\Search\Data
