When I look at indexed locations I see that my C drive is not ticked by default, however another oddly named folder is. If I expand the unticked C drive then I see that 'Users' is ticked... however :) that's not my main question although I would be interested to know what that folder is.

Main question... why does the number of indexed items seem to continually increment upward once indexing is complete ? I've noticed this in previous versions of W10, not just 1803.

This morning I had 25,417 items indexed. I rebuilt the index and that figure fell to just 12434 items. From this point on it grows and grows.

Add or Remove Search Index Locations in Windows 10-index-1.jpg

    Code:
    4th June... indexed items 25417

    Index rebuilt:

4th June 09:00, indexed items 12434 (indexing complete)
4th June 09:30, indexed items 19946 (indexing complete)
4th June 10:00, indexed items 20010 (indexing was in progress at this point, and I then saw it change to complete after a few seconds)

    PC turned off.

4th June 12:30, indexed items 20025 (indexing complete)
4th June 13:00, indexed items 20041 (indexing complete)
4th June 14:45, indexed items 20119 (indexing complete)
If I now open indexing and leave the Window open I can see that whenever I open a file (notepad files in this case), the count jumps up by 1. I'm not saving or altering anything. If I just sit and watch without doing anything the count still randomly increases.

(there definitely seems some correlation between opening something and seeing the index increment... its not random, it happens every time. Just sitting watching and the increment does seem more random although it happens)

    Any reason for this ?

    Hey Mooley,

Do you also have content to be included in the Index? That could explain the constant updating and increments in indexed items.

I haven't consciously changed or added anything.

As with all my W10 versions, this was a clean install and indexing was never touched (just left at default settings). It is now on 20161 items (lol).

Have you ever seen anything like that folder that is ticked ? If I hover over it I get the following message of this item is currently unavailable. Untick it to stop finding items that used to be here (see image).

Ah ! I have found this on TechNet which seems related:

If we look in the Index Locations, "Offline Files" is not even listed. If we hit the Modify button to change or add Index Locations, there is no option for "Offline Files." We tried adding c:\Windows\CSC, but that didn't work (it added fine, but didn't result in indexing user files). For some users, we see there is a "csc://{S-1-5-21-4273144342-2244290541-3066678366-1103}/" location listed. Hovering over that says, "This location is currently unavailable. Uncheck it to stop finding items that used to be here." It appears where the "Offline Files" would normally appear in the list of locations to Index.

That's interesting, thanks for confirming that.

Do you see your indexed items increment every minute or so ? particularly if you open and close something like a notepad file ?

I usually turn off indexing, but I do see the same thing if turned on.

It does appear to be normal, but couldn't tell you why. LOL

Indexing misses some of my user folders despite then being selected for indexing, I've rebuilt the index to no avail and run the troubleshooter. Any ideas?
