Word of warning. I ran these .reg files, restarted computer, then it failed to get into Windows. Or it sort of did, to a black screen with a cursor and seemingly low res.
Safe mode has the same issue.
Same happened when I used these. Black screen with a cursor that is only visible when moved.
The OP should at least have a big red WARNING that they should only be used sparingly and not be added with a foreach script.

Also, are you sure the files only edit HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services ? I transplanted a healthy key from another computer and it did nothing to alleviate the black screen.

    Warning added.

Correct, the .reg files only make changes in that registry key location.

A great article as always Shawn.

There are people on the forums having similar issues where services especially Windows update service and BITS have either been deleted or missing due to something. Expect some surge in the traffic of this article in near future from answers :)

    Hello!!!

I just made an account on Ten Forums to be able to thank you for the solution of a problem that caused me great inconvenience for a long time, because I couldn't understand the cause of it. Windows refused to update, W. Defender refused to run smoothly, programs didn't open or operate properly! All the Windows error codes misguided me to countless solutions that didn't solve all the problems. So I began to think that some virus must have disabled all the Windows Services required for a good Windows experience. And I was right! I downloaded the compressed file with the 219 registry entries and began an endless clicking... But it was worth it! Now I have back a good working system! I didn't have sufficient privileges for 38 services(as seen on the screenshot), but this didn't seem to have any negative impact!

I am grateful @Brink for your fantastic work!!!

    Hi Shawn,

Some feedback for this tutorial - I often see users missing Windows update service due to a malware infection or something else. When I recommend users to restore registry key using this tutorial, most likely it doesn't work.

I heard someone saying on the forum a couple of weeks ago, that restoring the key from another computer he had the same version, worked. Do you think it may be due to version mismatch, like this registry key doesn't match the Windows version installed?

Most commonly after restoring the above key, users hit 0x80070006 which indicates invalid handle.

    Hello Sumit,

I didn't see anything that stood out for this, but I have updated the Windows_Update.reg file with a current export to see if that will allow it to work for everyone again.

Thank you so much! My audio stopped working after Win 10 update April 30, 2020. It is now May 21 and I finally found this page. The solution was to merge Windows_Audio.reg downloaded from your list. I must have visited 20 sites and read 50 'how to' - none of which worked. Microsoft, as always, recommended to reinstall Windows. Whew! What a relief.
