    Hello Doctorjellybean, :)

    Yes, you sure can.

The notification area icons cache for each user account is located as the IconStreams and PastIconsStream binary values in the registry key below.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify

You can export these two registry values as your backup.

To restore them, you would have to kill the "explorer" process, merge the exported .reg files, and restart the computer to apply. If you like, using the "Restart Explorer with Pause" from the added context menu below can help make it easy to kill "explorer".

Would it be possible to export those entries using either a batch file or from the Context Menu?

    Hello Doctorjellybean, :)

If you like, you could use the command below in a .bat file to export the "TrayNotify" key that would include those values for your backup. It will export a "NotificationAreaIconscache.reg" file to your desktop.

    Code:
    REG EXPORT "HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify" "%userprofile%\Desktop\NotificationAreaIconscache.reg"

I've just tried it, perfect. Thank you.

I'd like to change the output location from Desktop to a specified folder, e.g. F:\_New System :)

    Sure, you can do that.

You would just need to change part of the command bolded in red above to the full path you want the .reg file exported to instead.

    For example:

    Code:
    REG EXPORT "HKCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify" "F:\_New System\NotificationAreaIconscache.reg"
